Ligonier, Pa. 15658 New Brunswick, N. J. 08903 HUNYADI continued Behind a barrage of artillery fire and catapult-hurled projectiles, his men rushed with ladders to the walls of the fort and began storming up them. They were cut down one by one. One Turk, however, managed to get all the way up and, when he tried to hoist the Ottoman flag in victory, Titus Dugovits tackled him so hard that both men fell to their deaths. Still, the Turks kept coming. But then, just as the Sultan began to taste victory, the Hungarians unleashed their “secret weapon”. They hurled “fire balls”, made out of brushwood, at the Turks. This stopped them cold. However, this was not quite enough for the infuriated Hungarians. For, on the very next morning (July 22nd), they rushed out of the bastion and fell upon the demoralized Turks. When the slaughter finally came to an end, 50,000 of them lay dead and the rest of the once invincible Ottoman army, including their wounded Sultan, ran for their lives. The Battle of Nan» dorfehervar was over at a cost of 10,000 Hungarian lives. HUNY ADI’S LAST MESSAGE Not long after his finest hours, John Hunyadi fell ill and died in the arms of John Capistrano. But before he passed away on August 11, 1456, he left a message for his countrymen. It was this: “Defind my friends, Christendom and Hungary from all enemies. Do not quarrel among yourselves. If you should waste your energies in altercations, you will seal your own fate as well as dig the grave of our country.” DONATIONS FOR MAGAZINE PUBLICATION EXPENSES: Pearl Kish......................................................................................$ 25.00 Chicago, Illinois Gay B.
