Page 4 THE EIGHTH HUNGARIAN TRIBE May, 1983 EIGHTIETH ANNIVERSARY Calvin United Church of Christ, formerly the Toledo, Ohio Hungarian Reformed Church, is celebrating the 80th Anniversary this year. Achually, 1983 is the 80th Anniversary of the building of the church edifice, and the 83rd Anniversary of the official founding of the church. The foundations of the church were laid in 1890's, when the people, feeling the need for religious fellowship, began to hold meetings in various homes, where they instituted religious services. Shortly, after we see formation of mutual-aid societies, the foremost of them being the “Mátyás Király Egylet •— King Mathias Society”, of the Catholic brethren, and the “Kálvin János Egylet — John Calvin Society, of the Protestants. The John Calvin Society became the fore-runner of the Hungarian Reformed Church. The church was formally organized in February, 1901, and on April 19, 1901, was officially admitted to the East Ohio Classis, Reformed Church in the United States. The church building was erected, and dedicated on September 4, 1904. During this anniversary year, many events are being planned. One Sunday a month, at least, is being set aside for special events. In January, the year was “kicked off” with an organizational dinner, at which plans were announced. February saw a historical program set forth, at which old-time movies and pictures were shown. In March, a chancel concert was given. April saw a special sun-rise service. In May, a regional Youth Conference was held, in connection with the anniversary year. This is especially appropriate, since it was in the Toledo church, soon after its founding, the “Keresztyén Ifjak Társasága — Christian Endeavor Society”, movement began in the Magyar churches. Also in May, a special reception was held to recognize and honor the older members of the church. June will see a “Bogrács” party and picnic. July will have an ice-cream social. August — commemorative program at the Birmingham Ethnic Festival. September — congregational picnic, and re-enactment of first service, starting with ribbon-cutting ceremonies. October — reunion night banquet. November — church bazaar, skit and talent show. December — final banquet and celebration. Recapitulation of years’ events. Members of the Congregation, 1937 —
