Page 10 THE EIGHTH HUNGARIAN TRIBE December, 1983 CONGRESSMAN TOM LANTOS OF CALIFORNIA Congressman Tom Lantos is an American by choice. The most memorable day of his life was when he stood in tire well of the House of Representatives and was sworn into office as a Member of Congress from California. Tom Lantos was born in Budapest and grew up in Hungary. After World War II, in 1947, as the Iron Curtain was descending over eastern Europe, Tom Lantos won a scholarship to the United States. In three years, Tom earned a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree in economics, and a Phi Beta Kappa key from the University of Washington. He joined the faculty of San Francisco State University in 1950 and began work on his doctorate in economics at the University of California at Berkeley. He completed that degree in 1953, the same year he participated in the founding of the Bank of America’s Economics Department. He served as a business consultant, economics professor and television commentator for some three decades. His government service includes senior advisory roles in the fields of economics and foreign policy. Congressman Lantos is currently a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Government Operations Com­mittee, and the Select Committee on Aging. He is the ranking majority member of the Subcommittee on Europe and the Middle East. He is also chairman of the United States Congressional Delegation to the European Parliement/European Common Market. Congressman Lantos is a founding Co-chairman of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus and is a leader in the fight for the rights of Hungarians in Transylvania. After attending military schools, he graduated from the Royal Military Academy Ludovika Akadémia. After the war, he lived in Germany and then emigrated to the United States in 1952. Mr. Simontsits has done other work of a documentary nature. He documented the Hun­garian Military Museum in Toronto, the his­torical visit of Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty to Toronto, Canada in 1973 and to Cleveland, Ohio in 1974. In 1975 he co-authored a pictorial documentary in Hungarian entitled Harcunk (Our Battles) 1920-1945 which dealt with the Hungarian military forces.
