RECENT VICTIMS OF RUMANIAN TERROR IN TRANSYLVANIA Besides the names widely publicized in the world press as victims of extreme police brutality like those of Géza Szőcs, poet; Ákos Egyed, historian; Károly Tóth, artist; Attila Ara-Kovács, writer and six other Hungarians accused of having contributed to the publishing of the underground paper called ELLENPONTOK (Counterpoints), we received reliable information of the following Hungarians who were arrested, beaten, tortured and some of them murdered by the SECURITATE during the last three months: Jenő Borbély, high school teacher and Katalin Biró, architect, both of Csíkszereda. They were beaten and tortured, according to witnesses, and their screams could be heard for hours. They have not been seen since. Reverend László Tőkés, Presbyterian minister in the city of Dés/Dej. Attila Váry, writer; Attila Kelemen, veterinarian; Mihály Spelman, historian and Gábor Tompa, of Marosvásárhely / Targu Mures Borbála Lukács, teacher, Csikszentmihály. László Bogdán, poet; András Balogh, theatre director; Zoltán Czegő, poet and Imre Markó, dentist, from Sepsiszentgyörgy. Víd Tarnován, sculptor; Dávid Szabó, waiter; István Daki, laborer; Jenő Losonczy, truck driver and Dani Poros, refuse-collector, Kolozsvár. Lóránt Kertész, economist; Mártha Józsa, student; Tibor Dénes, student; Dezső Kertész, laborer; János Imbre, laborer; István Sujda, laborer, Nagyvárad / Oradea. Károly Kurta, laborer, Válaszút. Jolán Borza, student, Szamosújvár / Gherla. Ilona Béres, Szék. Imre Balla, Feketelak. Balázs Vén, Búza. Dénes Ember, Szépkenyerümárton. Áron Balázs and Juliska Bogár, Kovászna. Béla Lőrinc, János Lukács and Jenő Ugrón, laborers, Torda / Turda. Géza Fábrik, Pál Pakits and Gábor Dezső, Arad. Imre Kalota and Ábris Konc, Gyéres. István Dombodi, Lőrinc Kásás, Mária Deák nurses aid and Béla Bubolik, mechanic, Ludas. We know that our list is far from being complete. The absolute control of the news media by the Rumanian government and the lack of communication between the Hungarian groups make it impossible, even for the underground, to gather information from every part of the country. Intimidation of witnesses, the danger of being arrested and beaten for “spreading rumors dn an attempt to hurt the reputation of the government” and the constant fear of being watched or even overheard by police-informants, all this blanket of secrecy under which the brute force of the police is the only might and authority. We were told by an informed source that by conservative estimate only one of every forty cases of brutality, abuse, torture and even murder, perpetrated by the Rumanian police against Hungarians ever becomes known to the public, and even then only in a very small circle. IT IS INDEED HARD TO BELIEVE THAT OUR OWN GOVERNMENT, THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, CAN EVEN CONTEMPLATE FAVORABLE RELATIONS AND AIDS TO A REGIME WHICH IS ENGAGED IN SUCH TERRORISTIC PRACTICES TOWARD ITS SUBJECTS!
