August, 1983 THE EIGHTH HUNGARIAN TRIBE Page 3 THE EDITOR’S CORNER . . . An urgent appeal has been sent to all members and some subscribers for a ‘Special Donation’ — the purpose to purchase the ownership-rights to this magazine, from the Bethlen Press, Inc. We ask all of you to help to achieve this ■— whatever you can afford — many small donations will amount to a large sum. Please tell your friends, club members about this magazine and the Hungarian Eighth Tribe Foundation; the reason they should subscribe and become a member. The growth of this magazine and the Foundation lays in individual efforts. The tasks of this magazine and the Foundation are so great, that it is above anyone’s imagination. The historical reports we are receiving to put forward to our readership, would revolutionize the thinking of our religious and social leaders. Facts, that we were not aware of before; facts that should be known to everyone of Hungarian ancestry. The response for the appeal is slow, the donations received till the present time have come from people who have to watch how they spend their income. Many apologize that they cannot send more. In this issue you can read the nationality breakdown of the United States. The Hungarians came in listed seventeenth with 1,776,902. It is possible that the number is higher, for many received the short forms, on which it was not listed unless the individual put it on. Many just listed themselves as Americans. We can safely say that 1,800,000 of Hungarian ancestry are living in the United States, the second largest Hungarian segment outside Hungary. One would think looking at this high number that the Hungarians have strong organizations, both religious and social. Whatever we have we received from our parents, grandparents. If we really look over the situation at the present time — it is an unbelieveable situation that we see. We have lost one-fourth of our churches; those that are still around will loose their Hungarian identity in a short time. The American Hungarian Federation, which is supposed to represent all of us, is in shambles. We have two reports in front of us, each claiming that they are the real representative of the Federation with different people at the helm. The AHF was established in 1906 to represent all Hungarian Americans, including those who were born in America. This and the disunity among the Reformed Clergy, which hurts all of us, is a sorrowful example which exists in the Hungarian American Community and so no worthwhile projects can be accomplished. In the September issue we will start a new column: ‘Hungarian-Americana’ by Paul Pulitzer. Editor’s Home Phone: 412—834-0169, Greensburg, Penna.
