Page 6 THE EIGHTH HUNGARIAN TRIBE Ju on the Balkan Peninsula, a development that Count Aehrenthal (the Austro-Hungarian foreign minister) tried to prevent in the interest of European peace. Because Russia, who had been granted a free hand in this direction by France and Great Britain — was concentrating all its forces to break through to the Balkan. Austro-Hungary had no other alternative, than to resist. In 1912 the Russian official Nikolai Hendrikovic organized the Balkan wars, and later the assassination in Bosnia. The charge that Hungary provoked the war falls to the ground, since 20 months prior to its outbreak Russia offered Serbia and Rumania large Hungarian territories which were impossible to attain without a war. On June 28, 1914 the heir to the Austrian throne vras murdered in Sarajevo- This assassination opened a new and tragic chapter in the history of Europe. World War One started. On April 6, 1917 the United States entered the war and the result of this action was of decisive influence to the outcome of the struggle. The dictated Peace of Trianon was the consequence for Hungary. A satanic policy was introduced into the Christian world. Self-determination, as proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson was transformed into annextion, which was the secret war-aim of the Entente Powers. This was in striking constrast to the aim of the Hungarian government who repudiated from the beginning all schemes of annexation of foreign territories and who only meant to wage a defensive war. At the time of the Peace Treaties, in the Bácska and Bánát the relative majority of population belonged to the Hungarians. In Bácska 605.000 Hungarians, 57000 Germans and 430000 Serbians. In the Bánát 590 thousand Rumanians, 380 thousands Germans, 280 thousands Serbians and 240 thousands Hungarians. Is it justice that the Hungarians, surrounded by alien races, living in the very heart of Europe should loose 37.5% of their own nationals, they, who defended Europe with their lives and blood, and offered hospitality to the expelled Serbians persecuted by the Turks and the Rumanians oppressed by the PHANARIOTS? The history of the post-war era was tragic for the Hungarians. The Serbian domination expressed national imperialism, treated the Hungarians with open brutality especially after the dictatorial rule of King Alexander. Even the elementary right of meeting and organization were forbidden. Expulsion of Hungarian official, the land reform, elimination of the catholic and Protestant church properties, the complete overhauling of the school system, which eliminated all the Hungarian High schools. Only in the elementary schools was some Hungarian taught. Taxes for the Hungarians, only for the Hungarians trippled. The hatred toward Hungarians was unparalleled. The new regime endeavored first of all the intellectual class, both spiritually and materially. With the Serbian settlements and austed Hungarians, the Hungarian population became a minority. Soon it showed the fundamental difference in the mentality of the SHS Kingdom. Yugoslavia was a precarious unity. Hungarian political rallies were not authorized, political candidates were arrested. Hungarians had not the right to vote. The League of Nations was founded to prevent farther wars. But the League failed because a false and vicious idea that international morality differs in some ways from the individual morality. The mistakes and injustice of the Versailles Treaties led to the Second World War. This started over Danzig, and there is a good reason for this, really a reason which shows that the greater the injustices in a peace treaty the faster they must be corrected, or they will lead to a war. We must constantly remember that no permanent peace can be based on a wrong, and that no world organization can be formed strong enough to maintain a bad peace — see the League of Nations and the United Nations. Any statesman who introduces a new territorial injustice into the world’s agonizing history commits an unspeakable crime. History repeated itself, and a most disastrous war started in the history of mankind. The end result is known to everybody. Let us review how the Hungarian suffered in communist Yugoslavia after the arrival of Tito’s partisans. Massacre of 40,000 Hungarians, who — they supposed— would not be able to be assimilated into the communist system. The Hungarian youth was forcefully drafted into the B.c. Petofy-Brigade and thrown in front of the German tanks. Forced return and execution of anticommunitst leaders. New federal constitution established the autonomous Territory of Vojvodina in the frame of the Peoples Republic of Serbia. Mass
