It was such a beautiful sword, that no human hand could have made anything like it. The golden blade gleamed and sparkled and on the grip, there was the ancient sign of the sun, the revered emblem of King Nimrod. A murmur of admiration went over the crowd. While the chiefs of the Huns removed their caps and bowed their heads, the high priest raised his arms toward the sky and spoke. “UR, our God, has sent us this sign”, he cried in a loud voice. “Just as we assembled to select the new leadfer of the Hun nation, UR revealed His sword and gave it to Atilla. Hail, Atilla! the choice of UR, our God, mighty ruler of the world!” “Hail, Atilla, mighty ruler of the Huns! Whip of God! Hail Atilla!” the crowd echoed. “Lead us and we shall follow!” Translated by Elizabeth M. tVass Reprinted from Selected Hungarian Legends by Albert tFass.
