Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE March, 1981 DEDICATION This magazine is dedicated to the Eighth Tribe in America, descendants of the original Seven Magyar Tribes. Whatever their faith, their familiarity with their ancestral language, or their degree of Hungarian ancestry, we address ourselves to each of them. If this reading is your first acquaintance with “THE EIGHTH TRIBE”, we hope you find it informative and enjoyable and that in time you will become one of our regular subscribers. This magazine is and remains the “LIFE LINE' that keeps us together, that makes us and shapes us into a national Family. THE EDITOR’S CORNER . . . On the last page of this issue, and the February issue, you can read about the proposed Conference on our Hungarian Heritage; secondly: the effort to formally organize the Eighth Tribe Foundation and lay-down the ground-work for a Hungarian Cultural and Educational Institute. The time is here for the Fraternal Societies, the political, religious and social leaders of the American Hungarian Community to pay more emphasis on the new generations of Hungarian ancestry, that they should be more familiar with the heritage left for them by their forefathers, who helped to build America with their hard work and sweat. The American Hungarian Federation would do the greatest service by co-sponsoring the Conference. As Dr. Béla Kollarits notes in his article (in the Hungarian section), there are no more immigrants, so to preserve our identity as American Hungarian the responsibility rests on the new generations of Hungarian parentage. They are the future representatives of the Eighth Tribe. A Conference of this nature was hold only once in the 1930-s (when this editor and persons in his age bracket were in their teens) sponsored by the American Hungarian Federation. In those years the AHF was truly the representative of the American Hungarians, when every fraternal and social society, churches and thousands of individuals wholeheartedly supported the AHF. That kind of spirit is needed today, to able this Conference to be a success; the aim of the Eighth Tribe Foundation to fulfilled. The time will come when we are long gone, and all the nationalities, who made America great, will have a memorial for their ancestors, accept the American Hungarians. We ask all of you, who read these lines; you may be a pastor, officer or a member of a church; officer, board member of a fraternal society; officer or member of any Magyar club, to discuss this Conference at your meetings, weigh the value of an accomplished, successful Conference, and how much THE EIGHTH TRIBE Editor ..................................................... In 1980 the Polish and Slovak Americans were able to gather thousands for their conference in Pittsburgh, Pa. — Can we Hungarian Americans bring together a few hundred? We ask all Hungarian publications, (weekly or monthly) to bring this Conference to the attentinon of their readers, as many times as possible, also all the Hungarian Radio Programs to do same, so this Conference gets the widest publicity amongst the American Hungarians. The date was chosen, because August 20th is a memorable day for the Hungarian people (St. Stephen’s Day), and this was the only weekend free at the Ligonier Holiday Inn. Please read all the information concerning the Conference on the last page. We will up-date the information in each coming issues. We would like to have your thoughts and your opinion on this matter. Our thanks to the “Chicago és Környéke”, a weekly publication, for publicizing the Eighth Tribe in evry issue. To preserve our Hungarian Heritage and at the same time, to save our churches, the pastors should urge their membership to subscribe to the Eighth Tribe. This magazine is the ONLY monthly publication that serves the Hungarian American Community in both languages. God forbid that it should cease publication.
