Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE February, 1981 DEDICATION This magazine is dedicated to the Eighth Tribe in America, descendants of the original Seven Magyar Tribes. Whatever their faith, their familiarity with their ancestral language, or their degree of Hungarian ancestry, we address ourselves to each of them. If this reading is your first acquaintance with “THE EIGHTH TRIBE”, we hope you find it informative and enjoyable and that in time you will become one of our regular subscribers. This magazine is and remains the “LIFE LINE” that keeps us together, that makes us and shapes us into a national Family. THE EDITOR’S CORNER . . . Recently we received information on the activities of the Hungarian Community in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. What they are doing should be an inspiration to all. The same thing could be done in the U.S., as the Eighth Tribe Foundation has advocated all these years. It can be done only by a common willingness to work together, instead of going separate ways accomplishing nothing. Beginning with this issue, we will present articles on the Calgary Miracle. (One major example from Calgary is that the Hungarian Reformed Church (Presbyterian) donated $2,000.00 toward the proposed Seminary in Akron, Ohio to train new ministers in the Hungarian Reformed Faith.) To preserve our Hungarian Heritage and at the same time, to save our churches, the pastors should urge their membership to subscribe to the Eighth Tribe. This magazine is the ONLY monthly publication that serves the Hungarian American Community in both languages. God forbid that it should cease publication. In 1974, the first year of publication, this magazine printed articles on Hungarian Legends by Dr. Albert Wass. We have been asked to repeat these articles, as most of the present subscribers did not read them, and we are out of some of these issues, or have limited copies. Our sympathy to Mrs. Béla Máriássy and her family on the passing of Dr. Béla Máriássy, a devoted husband for 41 years, father and grandfather. Dr. and Mrs. Máriássy were on of the first one to support this magazine and the Eighth Tribe Foundation. We have been informed that the Eighth Tribe Family received a new addition — a baby boy to Mr. and Mrs. John Sarkett of Chicago, 111. His name is Franklin Sándor. — Congratulations to the Sarkett family: parents and grandparents. THE EIGHTH TRIBE Editor .................................................... Sándor E. Now a final word to all my Brethren of Hungarian descent, those who just came in the last 30 years, those of you who have built our churches, our great societies: William Penn Association, American Hungarian Reformed Federation, American Hungarian Catholic Society: and above all those, who were born in this great country and still proud of your Hungarian heritage . . . your task is simple . . . just dip into your pockets and donate the amount you are able. Together with God’s help we can have a “Hungarian Cultural Institute”, a Monument dedicated to our forefathers. — Enclosed is twenty dollars to start the Eighth Tribe Foundation. Now you only need 24,999 more individual donations of twenty dollars each. — An American Hungarian . . . With the above letter the Eighth Tribe Foundation was born in July, 1978. The person since then passed away, but his legacy lives on. With the hope that some day the Hungarian Cultural Institute will become a reality. — editor
