THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON September 25, 1981 I am delighted to send my greetings and warmest personal regards to all those gathered for the National Biennial Convention of the American Hungarian Federation. This event provides a welcome opportunity to express my continuing high regard for the work of your organization. Your Federation is the focal point of efforts to perpetuate the rich and distinct cultural heritage of your people and to keep alive the spirit of independence that is so much a part of the Hungarian national character. This October we will commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the tragic day when Soviet tanks crushed the national uprising of the Hungarian people. The sacrifices made by Hungarians for their freedom will never be forgotten. Americans of all backgrounds can take pride in knowing that groups such as yours are working to strengthen America by fostering the cultural pluralism that is the foundation of our way of life. From this rich diversity has sprung our unity and our strength. Nancy joins me in extending our best wishes for an enjoyable convention and your continued progress in the future.
