Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE October, 1981 DEDICATION This magazine is dedicated to the Eighth Tribe in America, descendants of the original Seven Magyar Tribes. Whatever their faith, their familiarity with their ancestral language, or their degree of Hungarian ancestry, we address ourselves to each of them. If this reading is your first acquaintance with “THE EIGHTH TRIBE", we hope you find it informative and enjoyable and that in time you will become one of our regular subscribers. This magazine is and remains the “LIFE LINE” that keeps us together, that makes us and shapes us into a national Family. THE EDITOR’S CORNER . . . A few weeks have passed since the Heritage Conference and the day that the Hungarian Eighth Tribe Foundation was officially founded, two years after its birth, one of the first steps toward the establishment of the Hungarian Cultural and Educational Institute for the over three million citizens of Hunger ain ancestry on the American continent. We also realized that to achieve our goal, which the Conference laid down, our present approach to subscriptions and fund-raising will have to change. Up until the present time, we have put our faith in our church-drive membership method. The attendance at the Conference (only 8 churches) proves that this approach is outmoded. At the Conference, we spoke of organizing branches in various cities, initially started by those who are presently members of the Hungarian Eighth Tribe family. They should organize local membership drives, Fund raising affairs. A personal touch is most important to succeed. If every present subscriber would get three or four new subscribers, we could fulfill the wish of the Conference and many readers to have more pages in the magazine. We have to have enough funds to allow more time spent on the magazine. To tell you the truth, we do not know how long we can keep it up. We sent out, and we are sending renewal notices again to those who did not respond. In case you should receive a second notice and you already sent back your renewal, please disregard the notice-One of the local newspapers, the Greensburg Tribune Review, carried the news about the Conference and the future Hungarian Cultural and Educational Institute with a page width headline. Through this report, we have received several inquiries and new subscribers, but the most surprising one was a letter (printed further below) informing us of a Hungarian Catholic Church within 15 miles of Ligonier in Trauger, that has over 100 families. Looking back through the history of the Bethlen Home, we ran across the writings of Rev. Kalassay, where he men-THE EIGHTH TRIBE Editor ..................................................... Sándor E. I wonder how many other churches are still living, but forgotten. We were also approeched by another Hungarian Catholic Church in Windber, Pa. about 30 miles from Ligonier, and they too wish to join the family of the Eighth Tribe. They stated that if they would have known about the Conference,, they would have brought down a bus-full of people. In future issues, we will feature these churches in articles. In this issue we feature an article by Frank Csongos, a UPI reporter from Pittsburgh, on his trip to Hungary. This article is presented with the per mission of the United Press International. We are preparing a special flyer about this magazine and the Foundation for distribution, if any church, organization or individual would like have copies for distribution amongst their members or friends, we will be glad to send as many as they need.
