June, 1980 THE EIGHTH TRIBE Page 7 They did it, because for a thousand years Poles and Hungarians have lived together as brothers, working for national independence and freedom. They have always helped each other in times of danger and calamity. Today the Federation is a world-wide organization with thousands of members and political friends and has 77 delegates in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brasil, England, Venezuela, France, West Germany, Italy, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Australia, South Africa and Colombia. The Federation has chapters in Australia and Brasil— where recently the inauguration took place with hundreds of prominent persons and delegations of ethnic groups participating. Among members of the Federation are over 60 university professors and physicians, 69 clergymen of various denominations, among them five Bishops and eight Monsignors, eight members of the U.S. Congress, among them Clement Zablocki, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the House of Representatives. The Federation has friendly cooperation on the part of Bulgarians, Croatians, Albanians, Lithuanians, Latvians, Slovenians and Estonians. What Is Our Goal? First of all it is to fight for freedom and independence of Poland and Hungary, to help other nations of East and Central Europe and the Baltic States to achieve freedom. Our goal is to deepen the friendship and cooperation of nations whose countries are occupied by Soviet Armed Forces. Our goal is to arouse conscience of nations — because of the tragic errors committed by the Great Powers who signed the Yalta Agreement in 1945 — sacrificing over 100 million people to the Soviets — people with a history and culture of over a thousand years. Again the same error was committed in 1956 when thousands of Hungarians died on the streets of Budapest, fighting for their freedom from Communist oppression. Where was the promised help? The West helped to destroy the very value on which its civilization was built. The Federation is also fighting the Treaty of Trianon which has done a terrific injustice to Hungary, depriving it of millions of compatriots — given to other nations — Rumania in particular. The policy of the Federation is to warn mankind — that if it is to he saved from complete slavery of the red dictatorship — it is high time to look back and re-examine the historic blunders of the last 41 years. The Federation is emphasizing in our conferences and conversations with prominent people in the United States and Abroad that the first step should be made at the very spot where the tragic mistakes were made — that is in CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE. The people of that part of Europe started recently regaining their senses — in particular in Poland — the fight for their freedom is going on openly and secretly — not withstanding the pressures of terror and misery — whch have weighed heavily on them no matter the tongue they speak. Cooperation Between ETHNIC GROUPS The Polish-Hungarian World Federation by its activities shows the need for cooperation between the different ethnic groups. It became an urgent necessity for those who share the same geographical units tom up today by the boundaries of past mistakes. We in the Federation are of the opinion that these people in East and Central Europe — also the Baltic States — must be given the opportunity to rebuild their former political and economic life which they shared, built and enjoyed together. Only our unity here in America and elsewhere can restore safety, self-respect and dignity to every citizen no matter what language he speaks or to what church he goes. THIS IS AND WILL REMAIN OUR BASIS OF ACTION. OUR GOAL — NO MATTER HOW REMOTE IT MAY SEEM — MUST BE THE FEDERATION OF NATIONS OF EAST AND CENTRAL EUROPE AGAINST ANY AGGRESSION FROM WEST OR EAST. The relationship of U.S. ADMINISTRATION AND U.S. CONGRESS TO THE FEDERATION is friendly — as shown by letters from President Carter and Vice-President Mondale — also by speeches on the floor of the U.S. Congress praising our activities. Said Congressman Henry J. Nowak: “The Polish-Hungarian World Federation has expanded its members to more than 1,000 and became a recognized and vocal voice supporting the cause of human rights and freedom of self-determination for the peoples of the captive nations everywhere, including Central and Eastern Europe. The Federation has also been a prominent leader in the effort to encourage active cooperation among various ethnic groups as a vital ingredient in achieving this goal of
