Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE April, 1980 DEDICATION This magazine is dedicated to the Eighth Tribe in America, descendants of the original Seven Magyar Tribes. Whatever their faith, their familiarity with their ancestral language, or their degree of Hungarian ancestry, we address ourselves to each of them. If this reading is your first acquaintance with “THE EIGHTH TRIBE”, we hope you find it informative and enjoyable and that in time you will become one of our regular subscribers. THE EDITOR’S CORNER SILENCE, SILENCE, SILENCE . . . I was hoping that I could write a different editorial for this issue. An editorial in which I could tell you about all the tremendous support this magazine is receiving. The letters that are coming, are from the faithful readers, who have been with us for many years, and from those who are living away from a central Hungarian community or away from their parents. To them this magazine comes as a visitor from home. In the previous issues we told you that we are sending out notices for your 1980 subscription’s payment, up to now we have received about 40 % replies; a few cancellations. If you did not send in your subscription payment, please do. If you do not want to receive the magazine, please let us know. For the DONATION TO THE EIGHTH TRIBE FOUNDATION P. O. The owners of the Bethlen Press believed in this magazine and hoped that it would receive the support of the American- Hungarian community. There are catholic and Protestant Hungarians amongst the owners — so comprised is the editorial board of this magazine, so no one can say that it belongs to one faith. But the time has to come to a breaking point and that is very rapildy approaching For many decades we were talking about a magazine like this. A magazine that was above all factions,, belonging to all American-Hungarians. Everybody was for it. At the 1979 September conference of the Presbyter’s Association a resolution was passed, that the Eighth Tribe should go to all church members. Nothing happened. I wrote to the president of the Presbyter’s Association, the two Bishops, and individual pastors; silence from all. One elder from a church told me confidentially, that one of the reasons they are not advocating the support to the Eighth Tribe,, is that if the members of the congregation subscribe, it would show-up in the church treasury, which would mean a few thousand dollars loss. But at the same time the church donated a substantial amount to the World Council of Churches. I asked him if he ever heard of ‘Home Mission’ and tried to convince him that the Eighth Tribe would help instead of harm the church. I also learned from him, that he and his fellow elders do not favor the support of their church paper either. It is very hard to pin-point the reason why our unity is eroding. The American-Hungarians are divided into four catagories: those who were born in America; their parents, grandparents, who built our churches, established our Fraternal Societies, built our social halls and schools, and left manv things for us to be proud of. Second, we have those who came out immediately after World War II; third, those who came out in 1956 and after. Lastly we have those who have completely seperated themselves from their ancestrial background. In the last six years I have learned that there is a deep gap between the first and the second, and still deeper gap between the second and third group. This came to light in the present situation of the internal fight amongst the members of the American Hungarian Federation.
