Pagcó THE EIGHTH TRIBE August, 1980 Uncle Gábor, his daughter and Mrs. Ilona Quatro. Friends and neighbors, Nyírbátor, Hungary, 1976. The pictures in Hungary were taken by Suzi. bella Munson of Dearborn, Michigan. Her mother provided additional information. Their family originally came from Nyírbátor in Hungary where Suzi’s great-grandfather and great-grand uncle taught school and were also Kántors in the Byzantine Greek Catholic Church. Suzi and her mother recently spent some time in Hungary visiting relatives and exploring their family’s Hungarian background. Several pictures taken during this trip accompany this profile. Suzi Quatro's Hungarian grandfather was Szaniszlai János. Her Hungarian grandmother was bom Mulega Mária. They emigrated to the United States from Nyirbátor, Szabolcs megye. He came alone in 1908 and she joined him with their two-year old daughter (now Mrs. Munson) in 1910. For awhile they lived in Hammond, Indiana and later settled in Detroit, Mich, in 1916. Szaniszlai János had studied some law in Hungary but left deciding that there were more opportunities in America. He worked in factories until he learned to speak English. He also spoke seven european languages. He became a real estate broker and life insurance salesman. He raised four children, Isabelle Munson of Dearborn, Ilona (Quatro of Gr. Pointe, Mary Chaushoff of Dearborn and Árpád Szaniszlay of Detroit. He passed away in 1944. His wife Mária in 1958. Szaniszlai János played the flute but not professionally. However he and his wife had pleasing voices and sang old Hungarian folk songs plus the popular songs of their youth at family gatherings. Szaniszlai János has one living brother, 93 years of age, living in Nyircsákoly, Hungary. His name is Szaniszlai Gábor. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Quatro with Suzi at her home in England. Suzi’s Italian grandfather Michael Quatro (still living), emigrated from Italy to America at nine years of age. He worked as a water boy in the mines of Pennsvlvania near Latrobe. At an early age he married Laura Boscoli now deceased. Grandpa Quatro plays accordion. He and Laura bad three children: the oldest, Arthur Quatro (Suzi’s father), Adeline W orthington. La Canada Calif., and Sarah Watts of Harper Woods. Michigan. We would like to express our appreciation to Mrs. Isabelle Munson and Mrs. Ilona Quatro for supplying us with the family's background and pictures for this article. —S.E.C.
