Page 4 THE EIGHTH TRIBE August, 1980 Profile: SUZI QUATRO She was bom in Detroit, Michigan but now makes her home in Stapleford Abbots, Essex, England outside of London. She has been an international singing star in Europe, Australia and the Orient since 1973 but until recently was known to most people in the United States only as a female Fonzie on Happy Days. She is Suzi Quatro and the reason we are profiling her in the Eighth Tribe is because, like many of us, she is half Hungarian-American, her mother being of Hungarian background. Suzi was born in June, 1950 to Art and Helen (Ilona Szaniszlai) Quatro as the youngest of four sisters and a brother. Her father is an accomplished musician who has had his own band for many years which is in great demand for professional engagements in the Detroit area, and who has also been house organist at the Olympia arena in Detroit. Her mother is a fine singer, so it was only natural that all five Quatro children were well educated in music while growing up. Suzi herself plays piano, drums, guitar and bass guitar. Her sisters and brother all play piano as well as other instruments. Brother Mike Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Quatro is an accomplished keyboard player, sister Patti (Ericson) has been active in the all-female rock band Fanny and sisters Arlene (Stewart) and Nancy (Glass) have also played professionally. Suzi’s musical debut came at the age of eight when she appeared on stage with her father’s band playing congas. Her practicing sometimes brought complaints from the neighbors, but she stuck to it, eventually deciding to leave school at age 14 to pursue a musical career. Her first band, formed with her sisters, was called The Pleasure Seekers. Adopting the name Suzi Soul, she and the band played in cities from New York to Las Vegas. At the time, girls were not always taken seriously in the male-dominated Len, Suzi and Priest on her Wedding Day, -December, 1976.
