A PLEA FOR HUMAN RIGHTS AND PROTECTION OF NATIONAL MINORITIES DEEPLY MOVED BY THE PLIGHT OF THE OPPRESSED EAST EUROPEAN NATIONAL MINORITIES, AND IN POSSESSION OF OVERWHELMING DOCUMENTATION TO PLEAD THEIR CASE, THE AMERICAN HUNGARIAN FEDERATION CALLS ON THE PRESIDENT AND CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES TO DO ALL THAT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE RIGHTS OF NATIONAL OR ETHNIC MINORITIES IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA, RUMANIA, YUGOSLAVIA, AS WELL AS IN THE SOVIET UNION. LET THE UNITED STATES CONTINUE TO BE THE CHAMPION OF FREEDOM AND HUMAN DIGNITY IN THE WORLD, SO AS TO MAINTAIN IN HIGH ESTEEM THE COUNTRY AND THE IDEALS ADMIRED BY THE OPPRESSED EVERYWHERE. ☆ ☆ RESOLUTION ADOPTED BY THE MEETING OF DIRECTORS AND DELEGATES OF THE POLISH-HUNGARIAN WORLD FEDERATION AND AFFILIATES HELD IN CHICAGO ON MAY 24, 1980, CONCERNING THE PLIGHT OF THE HUNGARIAN MINORITY IN RUMANIA. WHEREAS: The discrimination against the Hungarian and other minorities in Transylvania is continuing and worsening. WHEREAS: The Rumanian Government is waging a carefully planned war against the Hungarians, by suppressing their language, churches, breaking up the national entities, falsifying the historical and statistical datas, confiscating cultural archives and make it more and more difficult for them to have satisfactory education. WHEREAS: If the tide of Rumanian chauvinism is not turned soon by the intervention of the United States, based on its HUMAN RIGHTS POLICY, this tide will develop into complete CULTURAL GENOCIDE. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the Polidi-Hungarian Federation, as our contribution to the cause of human freedom and dignity, is strongly protesting on behalf of the suppressed Hungarians in Transylvania. BE IT RESOLVED: That proper action be undertaken in defense of the Hungarians in Transylvania for the purpose of reinstating their legal status, concerning the use of the national language and cultural and civil rights. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That we appeal to the American Administration and Congress to take the necessary steps — even rescinding the Most Favored Status of Rumania — to effect fundamental changes of Rumanian policies toward the Hungarians to eradicate discrimination and create an acceptable legal and constitutional status in Transylvania, whereby all the people there can work out their destinies without the cultural annihilation of the Hungarian minorities. DO NOT RENEW PREFERRED NATION STATUS TO RUMANIA UNTIL AT LEAST THE FOLLOWING DEMANDS ARE MET: 1. The recognition of the Hungarian language in Transylvania as second official language. 2. The re-establishment of the Hungarian Autonomous Regions under strictly Hungarian administration. 3. The re-establishment of all Hungarian educational institutions. 4. The return of all confiscated libraries, archives and museums. 5. The return of old Hungarian cemeteries under the care of the Hungarian churches. 6. The termination of job-discrimination. 7. The termination of all harassments and intimidations in relation to nationality. These demands are the basic minimum the native population of Transylvania can expect in a civilized world! DO YOU KNOW that millions of YOUR TAX DOLLARS HELP SUPPORT THE MOST VICIOUS VIOLATORS OF HUMAN RIGHTS THE COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT OF RUMANIA? IN TRANSYLVANIA Three million Hungarians, Germans, Jews and other minorities are treated as inferior citizens, imprisoned, tortured, beaten to death by the political police, due to their ethnic origin! PROTEST THE PREFERRED NATION STATUS granted by our President to the COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT OF RUMANIA!
