Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE January, 1980 DEDICATION This magazine is dedicated to the Eighth Tribe in America, descendants of the original Seven Magyar Tribes. Whatever their faith, their familiarity with their ancestral language, or their degree of Hungarian ancestry, we address ourselves to each of them. If this reading is your first acquaintance with “THE EIGHTH TRIBE”, we hope you find it informative and enjoyable and that in time you will become one of our regular subscribers. THE EDITOR’S CORNER A New Year — A New Decade — New Challenges — Fulfillment of Our Responsibilities . . . With the year of 1980, the Eighth Tribe enters its seventh year of publication. The first issue was published in April, 1974. A magazine under the same name was published over 40 years ago by a clergyman, Rev. Endre Sebestyén, and a printer, Albert Fiók, Sr., of Pittsburgh, Pa. Their efforts were fruitless, and after a few issues ended publication. We hope that its reincarnation will not meet the same fate in 1980. Despite the fact that this magazine has achieved world-wide acknowledgment, it has been repudiated by many who should have been its staunchest supporters. For the past six years, only a little over 1,000 persons deemed it worthwhile to subscribe to. To continue with the publication and its related obligations we need 500 new subscribers each month in 1980. Eighth Tribe subscribers reside not only in the continental U.S., Hawaii, and Canada, but also in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, England, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Australia and New Zealand,. We cover the whole world. One cannot understand the real importance of this magazine without reading all the letters received by the editor. To answer all the questions and requests received would require a legal advisor and a built-in encyclopedia about Hungary, the Hungarian Nation, and the American Hungarian Community. Universities from the U.S., Canada and England are already inquiring as to what kind of assistance the Hungarian Cultural Institute can give, and when the book “Louis Kossuth: Champion of Liberty” will be published. Based on this, one would not expect publication of this obviously worthwhile magazine to end. However, for the past six years I have knocked on every door for support, all in vain. It fell on deaf ears. We should have over ten thousand subscribers instead of just a little over 1,000. The Eighth Tribe Foundation in 16 months lias received only $2,000.00. By this time we were expecting over $200,000.00. It seems we have money for everything except something worthwhile. We urge our readers to participate in gathering news for publication in the Eighth Tribe. If articles of importance appear in your local press about persons of Hungarian descent, organizations or doings— send the clippings to us. DONATION TO THE EIGHTH TRIBE FOUNDATION P. O.
