Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE July, 1979 DEDICATION This magazine is dedicated to the Eighth Tribe in America, descendants of the original Seven Magyar Tribes. Whatever their faith, their familiarity with their ancestral language, or their degree of Hungarian ancestry, we address ourselves to each of them. If this reading is your first acquaintance with "THE EIGHTH TRIBE', we hope you find it informative and enjoyable and that in time you will become one of our regular subscriber. THE EDITOR’S CORNER Looking through the many pictures from the Kováts Bicentennial Celebration in Charleston, S. C., I discovered one, showing Dr. Albert Wass (representing the American Hungarians) riding on a jeep reviewing the Citadel’s cadets. The realization came that after two hundred years, we finally received the recognition and joined all the other nationaties who are claiming distinguished service in the birth of the United States. The selection of Dr. Wass to represent us was a perfect choice. He represents a noble family from Transylvania, and is also one of the leading authors of the twentieth century in Hungarian Literature. His unselfish work in behalf of Hungarians, and especially those three million Hungarians in Transylvania, now under Rumanian rule, is known by all. DONATION TO THE EIGHTH TRIBE FOUNDATION P. O. Box 637, Ligonier, Pa. 15658 Enclosed is my (our) donation toward the establishment of a Hungarian Cultural Institute in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. $............................................................................................ Name ........................................................................................ (Husband and wife, please use first names) Address ...................................................................................... All donations will be published monthly in the EIGHTH TRIBE. All donations wil be refunded if our goal is not realized. We are no longer ‘looked-down’ upon as “Hunkies” or gyppies as we once were by many. We are one of a kind. Our parents spoke a language that no other nation speaks, and our culture is equal to all. We can trace our heritage back to the biblical land. Our forefathers suffered and slaved for the liberty of Western Europe. The Mongol invasion under Ghengis Khan, and the Turkish invasion of Europe ended in Hungary. Thousands of Hungarians lost their lives for the liberty of many. And now, we are finally recognized for our share in winning liberty for the United States of America. Whatever we gained in Charleston, the larger share belongs to Dr. Andrew Tibor Udvardy and his fellow workers. Working for over a year they spent many thousands of hours preparing, and planning for the celebration, not only in Charleston, but through-out the United States. Along with Dr. Udvardy, we must mention Mrs. Nuschi Kováts, descendant of the celebrant, for her tireless efforts in helping Dr. Udvardy, including the use of her home as headquarters for the preparation, and in submitting information of all kinds to various publications, and radio programs, and for taking care of all publicity. In behalf of the readers of the Eighth Tribe we say 'thank you’ to Dr. Udvardy and Mrs. Kováts. We also have to mention the tireless effort of Mr. and Mrs. Sándor Bodó, of Nashville, Tenn., in the success of the Kováts memorial. Mr. Bodó’s magnificent painting of Col. Kováts’ “Death Charge” is a true masterpiece. Our congratulations to him. The Kováts Freedom Medals, also designed by Mr. Bodó, are available in silver, gold-plate and bronze. Information how to obtain these medals will be listed in the next issue of this magazine. As in every noble thing, there always can be found a few who try to mar the success of an affair. We can thank God that they were not successful. All these show that we need a united body to achieve a complete unity and that body is the Eighth Tribe Foundation. When, oh, when will the so called "leaders’ realize this. To achieve success we have to live in the present for the future, not dwell in the political glory of the past.
