Page 10 THE EIGHTH TRIBE March, 1979 While we have received hundreds of telephone reservations, WE CANNOT HONOR THEM WITHOUT THE $50.00 REGISTRATION FEE per PERSON. For this fee you will receive: a. A guaranteed hotel reservation (in two establishments for reduced prices - singles start for $20.00 - and up - ON A FIRST-PAY-BASIS). b. Thursday evening: ticket to the musical performance. c. Friday: invitation to the lunch reception. d. Friday evening: formal dinner at the Citadel, which we have to pay 100 percent. e. Saturday evening: invitation to the formal ball. (plus tickets to other events that may yet develop) It should be remembered, that it is not at all sure that we don’t have to financialy participate in events arranged by the city, which registered visitors will enjoy for free. So far we know, that we will have a beautiful AMERICAN Michael de Kováts Bicentennial Celebration. To make it also A HUNGARIAN EVENT, is up to EVERYONE OF YOU. It should be mentioned that Charleston is a charming, 300 year old historical city with narrow streets and, mostly, 18th century houses, — very few rehabilitated. Anyone who can possibly spend an additional day visiting the historical sights, gardens, etc., in and around the city, would find the effort quite rewarding. We had a number of inquiries regarding flights to Charleston. There are a list of possibilities each day: Delta, Eastern and National air lines service the area from early morning to late evening. If there is any possibility that you might like to fly, it may be a good idea to make your reservation very soon. Hungarians who cannot attend the Charleston festivities, should support the American - Hungarian Bicentennial by joining the Col. Commandant Michael de Kováts Historical Society. Annual membership is $16.00. Kindly mail all checks to Nuschi Kováts, as Dr. Udvardy will be in and out of town. Nuschi Kováts 229 East 87th Street New York, N.Y. 10028 ☆ ☆ Dear Mr. Chomos: It is my understanding that you are publishing a periodical for English speaking Hungarians—could you send me a subscription to “The Eighth Tribe”—retroactive and starting with January 1979 issue. This info came to me thru Danubian Press where I just bought seven books for research on my grandparents who immigrated to the U.S. in 1906. Doing Geneology research on name Csáky and Pintje and Lemak and a great-uncle who was assinated by Russians. Sincerely, Sheila R. Smith Oklahoma City, OK. 73122 A rebuttal to Dr. E. Merdinger’s letter that ap peared recently in the Sarasota, Fla. Herald-Tribune. —Editor • * • Rumanian Charge Refuted Sir: As an American-Hungarian I feel it my duty to protest the article, “Rumania Is Struggling,” by Dr. Emanuel Merdinger. His remark that “some Hungarian immigrants after World War II are notorious war criminals” is completely untrue. It is well known that the efforts of Rumania’s party boss Ceausescu to loosen Soviet political control met with comparative success in his artificially expanded country. But Hungary — more than 22 years ago — not only struggled but openly rejected the Soviet hegemony and withdrew from the Warsaw Pack. Granted, Rumania has problems, but mutilated Hungary’s situation is worse. Let me expand on this: Until the end of World War II Hungary consisted of approximately 126,000 sq. miles with a population of 20 million including Croatia. After the Peace Treaty on Trianon (1920), the country was literally dismembered: the entire Transylvania region was ceded to Rumania (about 40,000 sq. mi. with a population of more than 5 million). All in all, the country lost two thirds of her original territory and more than half of her population. In August 1940, by international agreement, some territorial changes occurred. The northern and southeastern countries of Transylvania where the population was overwhelmingly Magyar (Hungarian) were returned. However, with the conclusion of World War II. Hungary again lost this vital and valuable region and also the earlier regained territorial areas. I absolutely repudiate Dr. Merdinger’s statement that “Hungarian irridentists are financially supported by Russia, etc.” This is completely ludicrous, and with it he made a laughing-stock of himself.
