Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE March, 1979 DEDICATION This magazine is dedicated to the Eighth Tribe in America, descendants of the original Seven Magyar Tribes. Whatever their faith, their familiarity with their ancestral language, or their degree of Hungarian ancestry, we address ourselves to each of them. If this reading is your first acquaintance with “THE EIGHTH TRIBE”, we hope you find it informative and enjoyable and that in time you will become one of our regular subscriber. THE EDITOR’S CORNER The Editorial Staff and the Bethlen Press wishes a Happy Easter to all. Our apologies for the lateness of the last few issues including this one. We will try to get back on track. Thank you for your understanding. The April issue will be dedicated to our distinguished ancestor Col. Michael Kovats of the United States Colonial Army who gave his life defending Charleston, S.C. against the British Army. He died on May 11, 1779. The United States will pay tribute to him on his 200th anniversary. (See more details on the celebration on another page of this magazine). The sermon was based on II. Kings, chap. 18, verse 34: ..., “where are the gods of Árpád”—rephrasing to read “where are the children, sons and daughters of Árpád”, emphasizing the importance of the proposed Hungarian Cultural Institute in Ligonier by The Eighth Tribe Foundation both in our church and social life. o-o-o-o The Hungarian Reformed Churches in Ohio will have a conference in the near future to discuss the old-old subject — Our Youth — why are they leaving their parents’ church. This subject has been discussed for the last 40 years. One recommendation was the establishment of a magazine to supplement the religious paper, to acquaint all those who were born in this country of their Hungarian heritage. This became fulfilled when the Eighth Tribe magazine appeared in the American-Hungarian community. May I recommend to the Conference: 1. Have the Eighth Tribe go to every family that belongs to the church, even if the church has to pay the first year subscription. 2. Let us try not to become one of the American churches, for if we give up or change the format of our worship service our churches will become a neighborhood church and will lose their identity. Then the second and third generation have no reason to belong to the Hungarian church. 3. Have the churches and their membership separately donate to the Eighth Tribe Foundation so the goal to establish a Hungarian Cultural Institute here in Ligonier will be achieved. The Eighth Tribe magazine and the Cultural Institute will inform our people of their Hungarian Cutural Heritage and the churches can lead our people in the Hungarian Religious Heritage. We have to work together, handin-hand. Then, and only then, we shall fulfill our obligations. Day by day, we receive more and more information of achievements in America and the world by persons of Hungarian ancestry, which we present to our readers. Unfortunately these facts were not available for us years before. THE EIGHTH TRIBE Editor ............................................................ Sándor E.
