May 6th to 12th, 1979 The American Hungarian Bicentennial Committee has arranged for a one week celebration in honor of Col. Commandant Michael Kováts de Fabricy, the Founder of the US Cavalry, from May 6th to 12th, 1979, in Charleston, S.C. The date of the 200th anniversary of his death (May 11, 1779) falls into that week. Sunday, May 6 OPENING in the morning: Artillery Gun Salute; Bells from all churches of Charleston; Field Mass in the Citadel and the Parade Grounds of the Old Citadel (two faiths). In the afternoon: Opening of the Col. Kováts Exhibitions in four different places. Main exhibit will he opened by General Mark Clark at the famous Gibbs Gallery, 135 Gibbs Street. Evening reception by the Honorable Joseph P. Riley, Mayor of Charleston. Musical concerts will he heard after the reception throughout the city. Monday, May 7 DEDICATION of a highway and a street in Charleston to the memory of Co. Kováts. Stamp and medal (coin! exhibition: Symposium from the LS and Hungary. ISSUANCE of a SOUVENIR SHEET from the Government Printing Office, other stamps commemorating the US cavalry. Musical performances with Hungarian and Polish dancing groups. Tuesday, May 8 Wednesday, May 9 — Program to he announced — Thursday, May 10 GRAND PAR ADE to the memory of Colonel Michael Kováts and General Casamir Pulaski with Polish and Hungarian participation under the sponsorship of llic Polidi-llungarian World Federation, the American Federation and the Col. Commandant Michael Kováts de Fabricy Historical Society, representatives of the Hungarian churches, organizations from coast to coast. Evening Gala performance in the City Auditorium. Thursday, May 10 MILITARY PARADE and REVIEW on the Col. M. de Kováts parade grounds of the Citadel: taken by Lt- Gen. C. Seignious, President of the Citadel; Dr. Albert Wass, and professor Gabriel Astrik. The parade is co-ordinated by Col. D. Nicholson and Dr. Tibor Udvardy. The Re-enactment of the Battle of Charleston. Evening: gala performance in the City Auditorium by the Charleston Symphany Orchestra. Friday, May 11 A memorial marble tablet will be placed outside the cty walls where the battle took place and a monument will be unvailed in the garden of the City Hall. Hungarian Bishops will hold the closing ceremony in the Protestant faith (as Kováts’) on the parade grounds. The service will close with the hells of Charleston’s churches and an artillery gun salute from the Citadel. I lie American Hungarian Federation will hold an honor meeting in the City Hall Council room presenting Governor Riley and the Mayor of Charleston with the Bicentennial Citation for their great service in commemorating the Bicentennial of the U.S. cavalry and its creator: Colonel Michael de Kováts. On this day America officially pays tribute to the fallen Hungarian hero, who not only saved General IP ashington s Army Southern-flank from distruction, but also saved Charleston, S. C. from occupation.
