Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE March, 1978 DEDICATION This magazine is dedicated to the Eighth Tribe in America which is made up from descendants of the original Seven Magyar Tribes. Whatever their faith, their familiarity with their ancestral language, or their degree of Hungarian ancestry, we address ourselves to each of them. THE EDITOR’S CORNER:— For over forty years at all our annual and semiannual conferences and meetings the subject of a magazine, such as The Eighth Tribe, was continuously discussed. Many of the people attending these gatherings are either deceased, in retirement or rapidly approaching the age of retirement. The time is approaching to enlist new blood to take up and carry on this dream, which finally became a reality in April 1974, when the first issue of The Eighth Tribe was published and now we are entering into the fifth year of publication. During the past four years this magazine has acquired national and international interest. Many people were skeptical about the future of this magazine. Some praised it, some were openly against it. Up to now the Bethlen Press has carried the burden to cover the expense of publication, for the funds coming in from subscriptions hardly covered the expense of paper and postage. The contributing editors are paying their expenses from their own pockets and we cannot expect them to do this indefinitely without reimbursement. We acknowledge that there are some errors that slip by us for we do not have the time to thoroughly proofread the original copy for correct grammar and misspelled words and sometimes there are typographical errors which occur during typesetting. To overcome this problem we should have two persons with qualified education—one in Hungarian and one in English—but present finances do not permit this. The magazine has to reach the point of being selfsupporting. THE EIGHTH TRIBE Editor ............................................................ Sándor E. Chomos Contributing Editors: ........... Albert Wass, Joseph Széplaki, István S. Tuba, Elizabeth Tuba, Steven B. Várdy, M. Takács Barboe, Endre Nánay, László Könnyű Published and printed monthly by the Bethlen Press, Inc. P. O. Box 637, Ligonier, Pa. 15656, DBA. Second Class Postage paid at Ligonier, Pa. 15658, DBA. Subscription: $8.00 yearly. To reach this goal we need the support of every subscriber to make a little noise about the value of The Eighth Tribe in their churches and societies. All Catholic and Protestant churches of Hungarian background have received at least one copy monthly through the past years and we feel that the pastor and church lay-leader will serve the future of their church by urging all the families of their congregation to subscribe to The Eighth Tribe. This is the best way to keep the younger generation informed about their Hungarian background. The same applies to all the Hungarian Social Clubs and Fraternal Societies. We are grateful to the editor of The Magyar Egyház, published by the Hungarian Reformed Church in America, for calling the attention of their membership the value and importance of The Eighth Tribe. We would like to call your attention to the books published by the Bethlen Press; you can find the list on the last page. These books are not fiction. They contain historical facts about the Hungarian Nation and Hungary, and Hungarians in the United States. These books should be in the bookcase of every American-Hungarian family and especially read by those who were born in this country, so they can enlarge their knowledge about their ancestors. We also recommend that the books should be read by the parents and grandparents. These books are not only interesting, but educational as well. When you are thinking of what kind of present to give to your children or grandchildren on their birthdays or any other occasion, choose a gift subscription to The Eighth Tribe and one of the books listed on the last page of this magazine. The Editorial Staff and the Bethlen Press wishes a Happy Easter to all. Every accomplishment, Great or SMALL... starts with the same decision: “I’ll Try.” In case this is an introductory copy — ivith our compliments to you — we hope you will enjoy reading the articles and will join the growing readership of The Eighth Tribe.
