Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE October, 1978 DEDICATION This magazine is dedicated to the Eighth Tribe in America, descendants oj the original Seven Magyar Tribes. Whatever their faith, their familiarity with their ancestral language, or their degree of Hungarian ancestry, we address ourselves to each of them. If this reading is your first acquaintance with “THE EIGHTH TRIBE”, we hope you find it informative and enjoyable and that in time you will become of our regular subscribers. THE EDITOR’S CORNER More on .. . HUNGARIAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE The preservation of the American Hungarian Heritage Dear Mr. Chomos: I was anxiously waiting for the August and September issues of the Eighth Tribe. I expected to see a long list of donors to the Eighth Tribe Foundation. To my disaapointment I only saw a few donations. I wonder if our fellow American Hungarians realize what is at stake! Your presentation on the Institute to the Conference of the Presbyter’s Association was very informative. It was regretable, that they did not have the stem to stand up and openly declare their support for the Eighth Tribe Foundation and through that the Bethlen Cultural Institute. This would not happened a few decades ago. I am also disappointed in the Clergy of our Reformed Churches. DONATION TO THE EIGHTH TRIBE FOUNDATION P. 0. Box 637, Ligonier, Pa. 15658 Enclosed is my (our) donation toward the establishment of a Hungarian Cultural Institute in Ligonier, Pa. $ ...............................................................................................................................................................................................-.......... Name ...................................................................................................................... (Husband and wife, please use first names) Address .................................................................................................................... All donations will be refunded if our goal is not realized. I am glad to see that the Foundation has the support of some our Catholic Clergy. Missing are the Fraternal Societies and the American Hungarian Federation. They should have been the first to endorse this project and make every effort that it will succeed. But, alas, no signs of them. What happened to the leadership in our American Hungarian Life? Dit it collapse completely? Or because there is no self-glorification for anyone in this endeavor, they rather have nothing to do with it! Hoping to see better results in the coming issues, Yours truly, An American Hungarian who cares (We hope someday our friend will indentify himself-editor) Editors Comments: Let us examine the facts as we see them: The Eighth Tribe is in its fifth year of publication. This year we gained only 82 subscribers, most of them are second and third generation of Hungarian ancestry. For decades we were discussing, that we need an English language magazine to teach our children and grandchildren something about our Hungarian Heritage. What happened? Four years had passed and only a few raised a finger in behalf of this magazine. All the Hungarian Churches receive copies of this magazine, but not many subscribed to it. Our churches have money for everything, they have grandious plans for new buildings, but not a cent allocated, that the young people might receive the Eighth Tribe. That by a chance they may learn something about their heritage. That by learning about their background they will stay at the churches of their parents.
