July, 1978 THE EIGHTH TRIBE Page 3 Editor’s Note:— The editor is greatful for the trust placed in him, even if it is only by one of his fellow-man. All the things which are written in the above letter can become a reality. To achieve this high goal—“it has to be a joint effort by every American Hungarian of all generations.” The editor has just returned from a trip to the Midwest. During a brief stay in Omaha, Nebraska, he visited the museum at Boys Town. To his surprise he found a priceless collection concerning the Hungarian Nation, which many of us do not know. It is about time that we of Hungarian ancestry create an institute to house our national wealth. We would like to hear from our readers, our church leaders, the presidents of the societies, and anyone who feels as the writer of this letter. For the American Hungarian Community there is no better date to express their feelings than St. Stephen’s Day. For centuries St. Stephen’s Day, August 20th was a Hungarian National Holiday. This year this day falls on a Sunday. It would be fitting to observe this day with a nationwide fund raising campaign. Let the American Hungarian community designate this day as the Eighth Tribe Foundation Day. On this day our pastors should speak to their congregations about the importance of having a Hungarian Cultural Institute. The Hungarian radio programs should put aside a few minutes for this purpose as a public service. The editors of our Hungarian weekly newspapers should publicize it in their papers. The American Hungarian Federation, all the Literary Societies, the ‘Magyar Házak’, and all other Societies should solidly line-up behind this project and have their membership receive the Eighth Tribe and utilize the Eighth Tribe to publicize their programs. * * * Now that the summer vacation season is here and many of our readers are traveling around the country, don’t forget to stop by and visit us. Ligonier is 17 miles north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Donegal exit). Bethlen Press is located on U.S. JOW. Enter at the West Plaza and A&P exit. We shall be happy to see you. * * * In the next issue we shall list the dates of the annual meetings to he held here in Ligonier during the Labor Day weekend and the following days. “ONE NATION UNDER GOD” "One nation under God.” That declaration in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, is the title of the educational program of Exchange Clubs which culminates in "One Nation Under God” Month each November. The program aims at making Americans more deeply conscious of the significance of religious faith in our national life, and bringing them to full awareness that only as "one nation under God” can we truly have "liberty and justice for all.” When the words "under God” were inserted in the Pledge by Act of Congress in 1954, President Eisenhower, in signing the Act, said they were intended to reaffirm the transcendence of religious faith in America’s heritage and future, and constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country’s most powerful resource in peace and war. "One Nation Under God” Month, highlighted by Thanksgiving Day, is a perfect time to bring into clearer focus the transcendence of religious faith in America’s heritage, its present and its future. Above all, it is a time for God-fearing Americans to assume personal responsibility for a renaissance of high morals and ethical behavior in their own lives, their families, their communities, and the nation.
