THE EIGHTH TRIBE January, 1978 Presenting the HUNGARIAN COMMUNITY OF TOLEDO, OHIO:— Part II. — St. Stephen s Roman Catholic Church HISTORY OF ST. STEPHEN’S DURING THE BICENTENNIAL YEAR The history of St. Stephen's parish began in 1892 when the first Hungarian people came to Toledo. Within six years, the first church, school and rectory were completed. In 1908,fire destroyed this compound, but all buildings were replaced during the same year. The beautiful war memorial of St. Stephen's commemorates the ultimate patriotism of our brave parishioners who gave their lives for our country in World War II. The present beautiful Romanesque structure was built in 1914 along with a new school and rectory when the existing structures had been outgrown within six years. Its twin spires have come to represent the people's staunch faith in God and pride in their ethnic heritage. The Hungarian-Americans of Birmingham were well representea during World War I by Stephen Dorcsak, son of Mrs. Theresa Dorcsak of 1877 Genesee Street. Serving with the Fifth Regiment of Marines, he was the first Toledo soldier to wear a steel helmet at the front in France.
