The Hortobágy is an area of Hungary with the most extreme climate. The annual average precipitation is under 500 mm. There is hardly any rain during the summer, and in winter there is no high barrier to withstand the snow storms. The annual hours of sunshine amount to more than 2,000. The flora of the Hortobágy consists of saline cotyledons, shrubs, sedge and rushes on the water banks, and swampy forests. The Hortobágy-the only existing extensive puszta in Central and Western Europe-was declared a national park on January 1, 1973. The total area of the Hortobágy National Park covers 52,000 hectares. The Hortobágy puszta is situated in eastern Hungary, between the Tisza river and the town of Debrecen. The clay soiled, saline puszta is absolutely plain with scattered small hills. Its major attractions is the infinite horizon, the landscape of the puszta.
