Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE May, 1977 WHAT IS THE EIGHTH TRIBE? The Hungarian Nation when entering the Carpathian Basin in the 9th century A.D. was composed of seven Magyar tribes of Scythian origin. Many hundreds years later some of the people left Hum gary for a newly discovered land — and this segment became the Eighth Tribe. To those who were born in this land, speaking or not the Hungarian language, Reformed, Lutheran, Catholic or any other faith, even if only a trace of Hungarian origin in them, to these this Magazine is dedicated. The first issue of The Eighth Tribe was published April, 1974. # * * CHANGE OF ADDRESS:— We ask our readers to send in their new addresses as soon as possible, as of now we have to pay 25 cents on each address correction to the Post Office, whether the Magazine was delivered or not. * # * We as®, our Canadian and other Foreign Subscribers to use International Money Orders payable in U.S. Funds, when sending in their subscriptions. GUEST EDITORIAL: Madeline Takacs Barboe If you’ll allow the following thoughts and ideas that occurred to me after receiving yet again the edifying and continuing worthwhile issues of The Eighth Tribe. Each month’s edition gets better and better and certainly more persons should be aware of the information contained within as well as for it to reach an ever-widening public here and perhaps in other countries as well. First, the enclosed poem is an expression I hope you won’t mind too much and in fact, I must apologize for the haste with which it was written after I read the January ’77 editio»; in particular, to your last sentence in paragraph 3, page 2 ‘The Edior’s Corner” regarding “this year’s progress . . . will decide the future of this magazine.” I’d like to project ahead a bit with the thought that NEXT YEAR — 1978 — THE EIGHTH TRIBE WILL BE FIVE YEARS OLD! It has and in all probability will have made many valuable and positive contributions to all who have read it, worked with it, subscribed to it, etc. Therefore, it must continue and I’m sure it will continue to reach out and touch wider audiences. IF AND WHEN PENSIVE Be not discouraged, Oh ye of deserving heart! The hopes you dream will surely find their mart, For so praiseworthy a well-laid plan, Can’t help in gaining many a fan! First, if you’ll allow, a little revision: It could aid to think about division; Divide and conquer! Then, each to one’s own, The total halved—might set more the tone! Next, add varied contacts to the past, But ne’er forget—as the present will enlarge, To the future you owe that which was last, And those of the first will still be your charge! —Madeline Takacs Barboe * * * It’s graduation time again. If your son or daughter has recently graduated from a college, university or even from High School with honors, we’d like to recognize his or her achievement. Just send us a picture and a short biography. THE EIGHTH TRIBE Editor ........................................................... Sándor E. Chomos Contributing Editors: ..........
