John Van Buskirk and his wife spent the 1972-73 academic year in Budapest studying at the worldfamous Franz Liszt Academy. In 1970, Mrs. Van Buskirk, then single, had studied at the Zenei Iskola in Kecskemét where there is a wonderful international program for those interested in the Kodály Method of Music Education. She returned to the United States for two years of study at the Kodály Musical Training Institute in Wellesley, Massachusetts and during that time met and married John Van Buskirk. The couple prepared for their year in Hungary by continuing their musical training and studying Hungarian. They arrived in Budapest in August of 1972 and resided in Buda for about three months, on Rózsadomb, and then moved to Pest where they lived on Népstadion utca. Mrs. Van Buskirk’s studies in the Kodály method and related subjects were divided between the Liszt Academy in Budapest and the Zenei Iskola in Kecskemét. Mr. Van Buskirk was a special student in piano at the Liszt Academy, studying with Péter Solymos. In addition, he studied chamber music with András Mihály. He gave several concerts in Győr, Kecskemét and in the Kisterem of the Liszt Academy. He also concertized in Switzerland under the sponsorship of the International Jeunesses Musicales. From this year in Hungary the Van Buskirks gained much knowledge from the wonderful people they were fortunate enough to work with, in addition to marvelous experiences and unforgettable memories which they are eager to renew with a return trip. Mr. Van Buskirk is a graduate of the Eastman School in Rochester, New York where he studied with Eugene List. He received his master’s degree from the Juilliard School as a pupil of Adele Marcus and Jeaneane Dowis. For six summers he participated in the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, both as performer and as member of the theory faculty. In 1970 Mr. Van Buskirk became an accompanist for Columbia Artists Management in a nationwide tour with the Columbia Operatic Trio and since that time has continued to be associated with many wellknown Columbia artists. In addition to solo recitals, accompanying and ensemble playing Mr. Van Burkirk’s career also encompasses teaching. At present he is teaching assistant to Eugene List, who is on the faculty of New York University. This past summer he was a resident at the Southern Vermont Art Festival in Manchester, Vermont, where he performed weekly in chamber music concerts. For his forthcoming concert at the Ligonier Town Hall Mr. Van Buskirk will play the Sonata in D major by Joseph Haydn; Prelude, Chorale and Fuge by Cesar Franck; Six Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm by Bela Bartók; L’isle Joyeuse by Claude Debussy; La Campanella by Paganini - Liszt; Liebeslied (Widmung) by Schumann-Liszt & the Mephisto Waltz by Franz Liszt. “THE ENERGY BOOM AND SOLAR HEATING” Learn about SOLAR HEATING. ...
