Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE November, 1977 DEDICATION This magazine is dedicated to the Eighth Tribe in America which is made up from descendants of the original Seven Magyar Tribes. Whatever their faith, their familiarity with their ancestral language, or their degree of Hungarian ancestry, we address ourselves to each of them. THANKSGIVING DAY At this Thanksgiving season let us be reminded of the words of the poet, “Count your many blessings, name then one by one; and it will surprise you what the Lord has done.” These words can certainly be helpful if applied in our everyday thinking. We are awed by the swift passing of our summer season! The harvest and autumnal season is ushered in, and shortly President Carter, in keeping with our time-honored American tradition, will formally proclaim the last Thursday of November as a national day of Thanksgiving. During the last war a soldier in the Third Army was sent to a rest camp after a period of active service. When this soldier returned to his outfit he wrote a letter to George Patton who was the General in command, thanking him for this rest period. The General is supposed to have stated, “Thirty-five years I have tried to give comfort and convenience to my soldiers but this is the first letter of thanks I have ever received. Surely, the people throughout our beloved country have reason to humbly and reverently pause and give thanks to the Hand of Providence for another bounteous harvest and manifold blessings throughout the Year of Our Lord 1977. • • • We are stirred by an earlier Thanksgiving proclamation by President Lincoln dated October 3, 1863 which, in part, reads most reverently and eloquently : THE EIGHTH TRIBE Editor ........................................................... Sándor E. Chomos Contributing Editors: .......... Albert Wass, Joseph Széplaki, István S. Tuba, Elizabeth Tuba, Steven B. Várdy, M. Takács Barboe, Endre Nánay, László Könnyű. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften the heart which is habitually insensible to the everwatchful providence of Almighty God... the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. No human counsel hath devised, nor mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the most high God. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people.” May we not be prone to forget the source of our bounties from fruitful fields and productive industry, much less forget the precious blessing of liberty which we are divinely privileged to enjoy. May we be moved, “as with one heart and one voice to solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledge the gracious gifts of our Heavenly Father.” THE EDITOR’S CORNER:— it was recommended by some of our readers, that one page of the December issue should be set aside for personal Christmas Greetings from one reader to another.
