In addition to being fortified, the settlements of the wealthy and the influential were also patrolled. Upon approaching such settlements, all strangers had to dismount, and before entering a yurt, they also had to lay down their arms. They could easily recognize the yurt of the village chief, both because of its size, and also because of the various insignia and flags which decorated the center pole that protruded far above the yurt itself. The insignia identified the clan and the tribe of the particular chief, while the number of the flags denoted his rank. This number could go from one to six, for only the ruling prince (later king) could display seven flags. In the tenth century, each clan and each tribe still had its own clan and tribal area, which were delimited from one another by strips of no man’s land usually called gyepű. Yet, the process of nation formation was also well on the way. This growing centralization is evidenced, among others, by the existence of a complex network of military roads and trade routes that hound Hungary’s several thousand settlements to one another. True, for a while this nation formation was not accompanied by political centralization. But in the last third of the century that too had changed. By the turn of the millennium (1,000 A.D.) Hungary was well on the way toward becoming one of the earliest centralized national monarchies in the European community of nations. ☆ ☆ 46 Action Lights Up Hungarian Venture Action Industries Inc. said it has reached agreement with United Incandescent Lamp and Electrical Co. of Budapest to set up a joint venture to make, import and sell electric light bulbs and other products in the U.S. The two firms will provide initial capital of $2.75 million and bank borrowings of $4.25 million.
