Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE January, 1977 WHAT IS THE EIGHTH TRIBE? The Hungarian Nation when entering the Carpathian Basin in the 9th century A.D. was composed of seven Magyar tribes of Scythian origin. Many hundreds years later some of the people left Hungary for a newly discovered land — and this segment became the Eighth Tribe. To those who were bora in this land, speaking or not the Hungarian language, Reformed, Lutheran, Catholic or any other faith, even if only a trace of Hungarian origin in them, to these this Magazine is dedicated. The first issue of The Eighth Tribe was published April, 1974. * * * CHANGE OF ADDRESS:— We ask our readers to send in their new addresses as soon as possible, as of now we have to pay 25 cents on each address correction to the Post Office, whether the Magazine was delivered or not. THE EDITOR’S CORNER:— With the year of 1977, the Eighth Tribe begins its fourth year of publication. Although the subscription is not growing to our expectation, the magazine achieved a world-wide recognition. Slowly, we are assembling an editorial staff, which will be composed from different segments of the Hungarian-American community. We are trying to build up the magazine to a high level publication. Already in colleges and universities where ethnic teaching is progressing, the reading of the Eighth Tribe is recommended as a background source for Hungarian studies. Most of the complaints received by us concerns the lateness of the magazine. We regret this inconvenience. There is nothing we would like better than to bring this magazine to you on time and at least 32 pages, tor we have the material, but the cost of production of this magazine runs about $12,000 a year and we received only $3,200 a year from paid subscription. This year’s progress in the increase of paid subscriptions will decide the future of this magazine. Many individuals, societies and churches are receiving free copies each month; these free copies are eliminated as the paid subscriptions are increasing. So I urge all of you who are receiving free copies—please send in your subscription to make sure you will continuously receive the magazine. If we would have the support of all churches (Catholic and Protestant), our Fraternal Societies and Social Clubs we could easily reach enough subscribers so the Eighth Tribe would become the main project of the Bethlen Press. The past year Bethlen Press printed different books which are an important value for the Hungarian-American community. The production of these books costs thousands of dollars—the Bethlen Press can only be reimbursed by the sale of these books. We regret to say the books are neatly packed away, waiting for orders, which are not coming as it was expected. We like to thank all those who sent us Christmas and New Year’s greetings. Your thoughtfulness is really appreciated. Sándor E. Chomos THE EIGHTH TRIBE Editor ............................................................ Sándor E. Chomos Contributing Editors: ..........
