Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE October, 1976 WHAT IS THE EIGHTH TRIBE? The Hungarian Nation when entering the Carpathian Basin in the 9th century A.D. was composed of seven Magyar tribes of Scythian origin. Many hundreds years later some of the people left Hungary for a newly discovered land — and this segment became the Eighth Tribe. To those who were bom in this land, speaking or not the Hungarian language, Reformed, Lutheran, Catholic or any other faith, even if only a trace of Hungarian origin in them, to these this Magazine is dedicated. The first issue of The Eighth Tribe was published April, 1974. STATEMENT OF OWNERSHIP, MANAGEMENT AND CIRCULATION Title of Publication: The Eighth Tribe. Frequency of Issue: Monthly. True to the Hungarian Nation’s tradition they were triumphant until the mighty Russian Army used their full strength to crush the Revolution and installed their own men in the governmental offices. The present government claims independence from Russian’s dictates, then it is about time to heal the wounds between themselves and those who escaped from the slaughter of the Russian Army, Their only crime was:Fighting for the freedom of their homeland. The Association of the Former Hungarian Political Prisioners proposed a Lincolnlike Emancipation Proclamation, which would give freedom for all to return to Hungary either for a visit or resettlement; release of all political prisoners; and return all those who were taken to Russian slavery. We, Hungarian-Americans, who were born or raised in this new land, look at Hungary with a different way, than those who escaped in 1956 and came to this land. We might not be so emotional as they are, but our feeling for our parents’ homeland are just as sacred as theirs. Over one hundred years ago this country went through the turmoil of a civil war, but after it was over, there were no victors or vanquished, we became one nation again and healed the wounds. The same could be done in Hungary, more brotherhood, less violence against each other. We pray to God, that the time will come soon — that the Hungarian Nation will be free to choose the form of government they wish to live under, without foreign troops on their soil. Sándor E. Chomos editor
