A Franciscan, he led a troop of ill-equipped students and poor people to the aid of Belgrade and liberated the present capital of Yugoslavia from the Turks. It was considered a miracle and he was canonized.” This is yet another of the historical falsifications and misrepresentations which appear in English newspapers. On reading such an article, the uninformed reader might assume that Yugoslavia has a lengthy history, dating back well before the fourteenth century. The Federal Peoples Republic of Yugoslavia was formed after World War I, by the Treaty of Trianon, by uniting the kingdoms of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and a large area of Hungarian land. Belgrade, the present capital of Yugoslavia, was originally a Hungarian city — Nándorfehérvár. Nándorfehérvár (Belgrade) was liberated from the Turks by one of the greatest Hungarian heroes, Janos (John) Hunyadi, in 1444, aided by a Franciscan monk, known as John Capistrano. Janos Hunyadi was born in Hunyadvar, now Hunodoara in Romania. His victorious campaigns kept the Turks out of Europe. Here is an account of the hero’s victory at Nándorfehérvár: “The self-assured Sultan finally launched an attack against the most important Hungarian outpost, the fortress of Nándorfehérvár (Belgrade)... The Pope ordered prayers in every Christian land; the tolling of bells at noon, reminding Christians to this dywy of the gravity of the danger. A Franciscan monk, John Capistrano, hastily organized some forces for a Crusade, and all of Europe breathed a sigh of relief when Hunyadi, relying mainly on his own troops, won one of his most brilliant victories, crushing the enemy’s superior might.” (History of the Hungarian Nation, Danubian Press, p. 46) Why were these historical facts distorted and changed? Hungarians all over the world are constantly finding such falsifications of their nation’s history. The city-names may have changed, but the historical facts have not. Why can we not read the historical truth? We are greatly offended and deeply hurt by such treatment of our noble history. For centuries, Hungary was the Defender of the West. Her position made her a buffer-state and the constant struggles weakened the country until finally, at the Treaty of Trianon (1920), Hungary was carved up and large pieces were given to Yugoslavia, Romania, Austria, Italy, Czechoslovakia and Russia. Now, to add insult to injury, people are constantly rewriting her history.
