Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE January, 1976 WHAT IS THE EIGHTH TRIBE? The Hungarian Nation when entering the Carpathian Basin in the 9th century A.D. was composed of seven Magyar tribes of Scythian origin. Many hundreds years later some of the people left Hungary for a newly discovered land — and this segment became the Eighth Tribe. To those who were born in this land, speaking or not the Hungarian language, Reformed, Lutheran, Catholic or any other faith, even if only a trace of Hungarian origin in them, to these this Magazine is dedicated. There are many social activities pursued by today’s generation to further or keep up some of the Hungarian customs in their own respective areas. We would like to bring all these to our readers, so they know what is happening in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, New York, Florida and California or wherever it may be. Send us pictures and descriptions of your groups. There are many of the second and third generation, who have achieved distinguished fame in their fields. We would like to bring this to the attention of our readers, so all of us can be proud of their achievements. The first issue of The Eighth Tribe was published April, 1974. THE HUNGARIAN HERITAGE Continued from December Issue We Hungarians have also one very unique treasure. One that we should always keep in mind. It is our greatest heritage:— THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE GREAT SECRET. Once upon a time, very long ago, a wandering holy man brought this secret to our forefathers, into the Scythian prairies, near the Baikal Sea. This holy man happened to be one of Paul's disciples. Our forefathers carved the words into a stone tablet so that the GREAT SECRET might never lnlost. Their Táltos and Samans kept this sacred tablet and taught the people according to its letter and its spirit. In the knowledge of this GREAT SECRET the Huns grew rich and mighty. In the spirit of the GREAT SECRET, the seven leaders of the Hungarian tribes made their blood-alliance and Arpad led the nation into their new homeland, in the Carpathian Basin. In the knowledge and the spirit of this GREAT SECRET, the Hungarians were altle io build a rich and prosperous country in this new land. Then, somewhere during the centuries, the stone tablet got lost and the GREAT SECRET became forgotten. Only a very few could remember the words and hand down this knowledge secretly from generation to generation. An old Szekely whispered it to me one dark night, high in the mountains, as we sal beside the fire. And now I am handing it down to you that you might all know it. Thus were the words of the GREAT SECRET carved into stone: Stronger weapon than sword or spear ... Safer defense than shield or bastion . .. More lasting in value than gold or silver. .. Is the faithful love one toward the other. This lost stone tahiét is our greatest and most important heritage. 1Fass Albert
