August, 1975 THE EIGHTH TRIBE Page Nine edftotfe pad Who am I? This is a question thousands of persons ask themselves. They are searching for something, but they cannot find it in the present and certainly not in the future. Eventually we all find ourselves turning to the past to find our inner beings. The influence of the ancient Greeks and Romans dominated the world for centuries, until their society’s moral values began to decay. The United States reached this state in a much shorter span of time. Immigrants came to the U.S. in increasingly larger numbers, prejudices began to develop. Many people tried to deny this background so they wouldn’t be type-cast or subject to ethnic slander. But President Theodore Roosevelt once said, “If you don’t honor your father’s heritage, you won’t honor America.” This nation found out how true that statement was. We who belong to the family of the Eighth Tribe should be proud of our Hungarian heritage. The legacy our forefathers left us should strengthen our lives. It took many thousands of years of wandering until the Magyars arrived on the plain of the Danube. They became the bulwark of Christianity. In the last two centuries some again took up their belongings and came to America. We were from a small nation of not more than 18 million, but gave the United States comparatively more in the fields of science, music, art and literature than many other countries. The books that are being published by the Bethlen Press this year and the next, commemorating the Bi-Centennial of the U.S., will prove this to be significantly true. ☆ ☆ Commemorating the Bicentennial Year of the U.S. the Bicentennial Year Committee of the American Hungarian Federation and the American Hungarian Literary Guild under the supervision of Mr. Albert Wass will publish two Booklets in 1974: “Our Hungarian Heritage” in English and “Magyar Örökségünk” in Hungarian. These Booklets will contain: 1. Brief History. 2. Culture: Hungarians in the field of Science, Arts, Industry and Sports. 3. Hungarians in America and their contributions. f The EIGHTH TRIBE P. 0.
