petïjlen J|ome Cultural Center On Wednesday, September 24th we had the honor of hearing DÜVŐ, one of Hungary’s best folk music bands, perform here in Ligonier at the Town Hall. The members of DÜVŐ have dedicated their lives to the study of Hungarian folk music from the great masters of remote villages where the authentic forms of folk music can still be heard. This was apparent throughout their performance. Members of the band played varied old Hungarian instruments including the cimbalom and tekerő (hurdy gurdy). In fact, the following morning, a special lesson was given to a member of our staff on the hurdy gurdy - hopefully we will be able to perform some numbers soon. Above: DÜVŐ Folk Band Harvest Picnic Despite cool and somewhat rainy weather, a successful Harvest Picnic was held Saturday, October 4th under the beautiful trees of our picnic area. This event was sponsored by the Kossuth Club, HRFA and The Bethlen Home. We enjoyed gulyás and pencsenye along with delicious pastries. Szalonna sure was a big hit in this cool weather - a perfect way to end the evening. Our residents were able to enjoy some of the gulyás and langos too! We thank everyone for their hard work in making this a success! Above and at left: Warming up at the Harvest Picnic Mikulás - St. Nick Mikulás was December 6th!! If you put your shoes out (clean preferably!), in the evening, in the morning you might have found a surprise. If you were good throughout the year, you might have found some candy, nuts and fruit. But if you were also a bit naughty, you might have found an onion or a piece of coal!! Mikulás is becoming a tradition here at The Bethlen Home and Ligonier Gardens. Parents, you might want to start this Hungarian (European) tradition in your homes too. Above: Hungarian Fidesz Party members visiting The Bethlen Home on July 20th. Greeting the guests are Lajos and Edith Szép. Magdalene Ujvági, Rev. Imre A. Bertalan and Rev. Joseph Posta.
