Hctüritp J|tgí)ltgí)tsí SEPTEMBER FOR THIS IS HALLOWEEN September is betwixt-between Autumn's gold and summer's green, Not still quite summer, yet not fall, But cool enough to wear a shawl. Songbirds have left for southern clime But some still think it's summertime And linger, when the others fly, To let us know they're standing by. The leaves aquiver on the tree Seem unsure of what their role will be. While some are edged with autumn's gold, Others to summer's green still hold. The rose clings to her summer pride And blushes like a sweet June bride; When comes the purple shades of night, Gold harvest moon steals her delight. We greet thee autumn with warm "hello" But hate to see the summer go. September, you're one of our kind; Like us, you can't make up your mind. Without sound, spooks prowl around, For this is Halloween The white ghosts bound upon the ground, For this is Halloween. The shadows gaunt, their long arms flaunt, But ghouls and goblins never daunt. Across the sky the queer shades fly, For this is Halloween. Strange Jock-o-lights shine in the night, For this is Halloween. Each eerie sprite shrinks from the sight, For this is Halloween. The night-winds groan and shriek and moan, And children mustn't be alone, While black cats race, and fairies chase, For this is Halloween. The owls dart and make one start, For this is Halloween. With subtle art, elves play their part, For this is Halloween. Like omens ill, the dead leaves fill Each doorway and each windowsill; When pumpkins glow, then we all know, This must be Halloween. BOUNTEOUS OCTOBER October now at last has come, With all her bounteous store, To greet us one and all again As oftentimes before. Her pumpkins are a golden heap, Her apples, rosy red, And leaves of many hues and shades Around us she has spread. The sumac's crimson leaves look bright The black oak's leaves are brown, Their colors seem to harmonize As they come drifting down. The cornstalks wave their yellow tops And full-grown ears appear; Oh, what can be more glorious Than this time of year?
