PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS RESPONSE We have already received an outstanding number of responses for this year’s Presents for Patients campaign. Many family members, community groups and merchants are sponsoring several residents. I would like to express my appreciation to those who are sponsoring someone here at the Bethlen Home. Christmas can be a lonely time, especially for those who no longer have family or friends who can visit. You help to make them feel very special, appreciated and loved. Mayyoualsohaveajoyous holiday season and a blessed New Year. Residents must provide their own cash for shopping, as well as lunch. Departure forthetrip will beat 10a.m. Anyone having any questions, please see Sherry in the Activity Department. KING AND QUEEN OF HEARTS CONTEST Each year, the Activity Department sponsors a King and Queen of Hearts Contest. Families, residents and staff members are encouraged to vote for their “favorite couple”. Residents are chosen by a drawing. The names will be posted on both floors by the nursing stations, so that you will be able to cast your vote. The King and Queen of Hearts winners will be announced at the Valentine’s Party on February 14th. A special Sweetheart’s Dinner will be held for those residents being nominated, along with several other couples. The nominees will be announced in January. So, everyone, keep your fingers, toes, etc. crossed. You may just be our lucky winners. CHRISTMAS RUSH Now that Thanksgiving is over, everyone rushes about trying to prepare for Christmas. Remember the late nights of baking, battling the crowds at the stores trying to find the perfect gift? Then you think to yourself, is it worth it all for just one day? Then, when Christmas Day finally arrives, you see that it was worth every bit of the hustle and bustle. Thefollowing poem should bring a little laughter and memories from your old shopping days. CHRISTMAS HASH by Ogden Nash You wish those jingle bells would hush, You slither through the slop and slush, And busses spatter you with mush ... Shop counters teem with offerings lush, You lose the sales clerk in the crush, The world has lost its rosy flush ... That’s what we call the Christmas rush . . . Yes, everyone complains and hollers, But we wouldn’t miss it for a million dollars! My fingers ache from lugging parcels, I limp on battered metatarsals, My tongue is dry from licking stamps, I’m lost in Christmas lights and amps, I’m in that yearly Yuletide mess, And so are you, I shrewdly guess, It’s tough on you and rough on me But gosh, it’s worth it, don’t you agree? It’s time to decorate the tree And if you’re anything like me When you mix little bulbs and wires Electricity expires!! Birds and stars become unspangled Angels in your hair get tangled And if you laugh off such mishaps Ladders under you collapse ... But still I know if you’re like me You wouldn’t miss it ... no siree!! I fear that I shall never more see A good old-fashioned Christmas tree, A Christmas tree of natural green That smells so crisp and cold and clean, The march of science is so relentless, Now trees are pink and purple and scentless, But I prefer that ancient hue, An evergreen Christmas ... don’t you? Scrooge was a Christmas-hating miser; It took a ghost to make him wiser. But you and I and Tiny Tim Are miles and miles ahead of him. We do not need to have a ghost Teach us a cheery Christmas toast. And so, no sooner said than done .. My friend, God bless us, every one!
