Recovery can begin very quickly after on­set with the help of a multidisciplinary team designed with a common goal; maximizing skills and opportuni­ties to regain independence within physical limits. Medical Support: Physicians and nurses will investi­gate the causes of your stroke and prescribe a medi­cine to aid in your recovery. Social Services: Social workers aid in the adjustment to residual disability caused by the stroke. They will provide a supportive atmosphere where patients can learn to accept and adjust to life with a disability. Physical Therapists: Physical therapists retrain pa­tients to walk again (gait and ambulation), maintain correct body alignment, increase functional use in lower extremities, aid in awareness of safety cues. Occupational Therapists: Occupational therapists ad­dress function as it relates to activities of daily living (ADL’s) such as dressing, bathing, feeding, cooking, and rebuild transfer skills while in asafe environment adapted to increase independence. Speech Therapy: Speech therapists retrain patients to increase communication skills through attaining new language skills. They will educate and rebuild a patient’s language deficits due to aphasia and dysar­­thua. Educates and treats patients with dysphagia to initiate a safe swallow. Modern medicine has enabled a multidisciplinary team to worktogetherto help patients recoverfrom a disabling illness. Strokes, at one time, were consid­ered to indicate permanent bed fast.
