William Jackson Smart, who himself was an actual father, devoted himself to raising his family of six young children after his wife died an early death. Years later, this inspired his daughter to promote a special day to honor all fathers everywhere to be recognized for their many untold sacrifices. Her dream became a reality on Sunday, June 19th in 1910. This day was dedicated through the Spokane Ministerial Association. A proclamation had also been issued by the mayor of Spokane, and thus the governor set aside the date of observance to be set throughout the state. It was also suggested by Mr. Smart’s daughter that a wearing of a rose be held. A red rose would indicate and honora living father, and a white rose would be in remembrance of those deceased. This tradition is carried out today. The following poem is dedicated to our male residents here at Bethlen Home. I’m surethey will be able to recall many special times they’ve shared with their father and with their children. FATHER by Dorothea Robisch Who worked so hard and saved so long For what we have today? And anytime will sacrifice His chance to rest or play? Who always sees his children have The things he did without? And gives so much, unselfishly, For that's what love’s about. Who thinks and plans and struggles, too, As nobly as he can To set a good example, and Be a respected man? Who seeks no honors, no rewards For all that he has done? Except to raise a family The very finest one. Though we cannot evalute Our dad, his love, his worth, To us he’ll always be “just Dad,” The greatest guy on earth.
