My first reaction ... Isn’t it a shame that we need a special day to remind us of our Grandparents? However, I guess all of us could use a reminder now and then. Whether it is a card, a phone call or visit to a loved one in a Nursing Home or in their own home, it is important to them. In most cases, if we learn to listen, it will meet their needs. Residents in a Nursing Home have a great many feelings they need to talk through. Too often, we spend time telling them how they should feel instead of dealing with how they really feel. Listening is simple, but it is not easy. The natural human tendency isto AVOID. Some residents will use guilt as a method of avoiding and others will use anger, either at family or staff members. Listening requires a great deal of concentration to see through the avoiding. Listening means we are patient enough to let them go through the avoidance game until they finally begin to let us in. Also, lots of help is needed to prepare for the Bazaar. We’re on the countdown during the month of October!
