^cthrít^ JHtgfyítgljtö PANPHA CONFERENCE HELD LOCALLY SPECIAL HOLIDAYS During the next several months, we will be celebrating several Patriotic holidays. Memorial Day and the Fourth of July bring to mind ourtrue patriotism in our country. Below are several poems for your enjoyment. AMERICAN FLAG by Joseph Rodman Drake When Freedom from her mountain height Unfurled her standard to the air, She tore the azure robe of night, And set the stars of glory there; She mingled with its gorgeous dyes The milky baldric of the skies, And striped its pure, celestial white With streakings of the morning light Then from his mansion in the sun She called her eagle bearer down, And gave unto his mighty hand The symbol of her chosen land. O BEAUTIFUL, MY COUNTRY by Frederick L. Hosmer O beautiful, my country! Be thine a nobler care, Than all thy wealth of commerce, Thy harvest waving fair; Be it thy pride to lift up The manhood of the poor; Be thou to the oppressed Fair Freedom’s open door. The Pennsylvania Association of Non-Profit Homes for the Aging (PANPHA) opened its twenty-ninth annual conference recently in Pittsburgh, PA, at the Lawrence Convention Center and the Vista International Hotel. Representatives from Administration, Dietary, Nursing, Social Service and Activities Departments were featured at this conference from over 270 homes in Pennsylvania. Rev. Paul and Edith Kovács, JoAnne Schmucker and Jane Eicher represented Bethlen Home at the convention. The Nursing Department was able to attend a wide variety of workshops on today’s Healthcare concerns, such as Aids, Regulations, etc. The Administration wasalsochecking out workshopsconcerning Personal Care, Independent Living and Regulations. After the hectic days, special evenings were planned by PANPHA, such as dinner at the Carnegie Science Center, Gateway Clipper Partyliner, etc. Oneof the mostenjoyed programs at the conference were the exhibits. The exhibits displayed items such as furniture for health care facilities, buses equipped for the handicapped, etc. These exhibits help to show what is available today in health care. The conference was very much enjoyed by our staff, and Jane Eicher, our Directorof Nursing, even won a cordless phone! FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS The next Family Support Group Meeting will be held in mid-July. Details of the date will be given in June, and posters will be on display in the Home announcing the event. July’s topic will be “CANCER, THE EARLY DETECTION”, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Families and residents are encouraged to attend. Anyone having any suggestions for topics can contact Pat Armel or Sherry Humbertson. The Support Group is trying to reach family needs of questions on specific and relevant topics. September’s meeting date will also be announced closer to the time. The topic is “CHOLESTEROL”, sponsored by the American Heart Association. The attendance of previous meetings has been poor. We would appreciate feedback of interest. If attendance continues to be low in number, the meetings will be discontinued. For thee our father suffered, For thee they toiled and prayed; Upon thy holy altar Their willing lives they laid. Thou hast no common birthright; Grand memories, on thee shine, The blood of pilgrim nations, Commingled, flows in thine. O beautiful, our country! Round thee in love we draw; Thine is the grace of freedom, The majesty of law. Be righteousness thy scepter, Justice thy diadem; And on thy shining forehead Be peace the crowning gem.
