Jfrmtt tlje director of pursing by Jane Eicher A JOB WELL DONE Just a special “Thanks” to everyone for all the cooperation during the recent State Survey. All of you did a wonderful job which resulted in a very satisfactory report. The nicest feeling is knowing that your excellent performance was not just a one shot deal for the inspection, but instead, a year in year out commitment from the entire staff of the Bethlen Home. OVERFLOWING WISHES Imagine ... a huge basket, filled to the top and overflowing with “Thank You’s”. That is what 1 extend to each nurse at the Bethlen Home. Nursing has changed over the years, but the basic requirements are the same. It still requires a person willing to make a commitment, willing to give and willing to serve. Geriatrics is an especially demanding part of nursing. Once thought of as a “dead end”, it is now a forerunner in the nursing field. It is also one of the most scrutinized areas today, due to new Federal and State regulations. OBRA 87 has pushed Geriatrics into the spotlight. However, our commitment remains the same, to provide as much quality of life to our older residents as possible. It is this idea that every member of the Bethlen Home Nursing Staff strives to accomplish. A hand to hold, a shoulder to lean a head against, a smile, a thoughtful comment... all have special meaning to our elderly guests. It also highlights the commitment of the nurses and the entire staff of Bethlen Home. So, keep up the good work and remember my overflowing basket of “Thank You’s”. MAY IS NATIONAL HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE MONTH Hypertension is often called the “silent killer”, due to the fact that it often goes undetected and can cause serious health problems. If hypertension is allowed to go undetected, it can cause serious damage to the major organs, especially the heart and the kidneys. Essential hypertension is characterized by an elevation of both the systolic and diastolic pressure. Symptoms of essential hypertension may manifest as dizziness, headache and tinnitus. Arterioscleratic hypertension occurs when the arteries become inelastic. This is characterized by a high systolic and a normal or low diastolic pressure. Arterioscleratic hypertension is commonly found in persons over the age of 50. Serious complications can occur if hypertension is untreated, and they include heart attack, renal failure, visual problems and cerebral vascular accidents. The treatment of hypertension generally consists of lowering the blood pressure with exercise, adequate rest, proper diet, weight reduction and/or antihypertensive drugs. Hypertension is relatively easy to control, but it must first be detected. So, make it a point to have your blood pressure checked this month. SELL! SELL! SELL! I’m beginning to see why resident Olga Szabo was sent from New York. The city was probably afraid that she would sell Lady Liberty or the Empire State Building. Olga enjoys volunteering in the Bethlen Home Gift Shop and offers a variety of gifts for both young and old. She currently has a great selection of Spring and Easter items, and just ask her about her layaway plan! Keep on doing the great work, Olga!! 3RD ANNUAL SPRING CRAFT SHOW APRIL 3RD & 4TH One of the most enjoyable things that the residents look forward to is preparing for another Spring Craft Show or Bazaar.
