As the animals gathered around the twinkling tree, every animal had appeared except for the small gray house spiders. Where were they wondered the animals? Well the house mother was always a very neat and tidy woman and had no use for spiders. She would continually go around sweeping up so the spiders would have to run off double quick. It was only in the remote nooks and crannies of the house that the spiders felt safe. The spiders longed to see the beautiful tree with all its lights. The spiders then spoke to the Christ Child who loves all creatures, even the most homeliest and most humble, that they were unable to see the tree. The Christ Child then led the spiders in to see the tree after everyone else had gone. All the spiders and their family came to see the marvelous sight. As they began to climb, and go from branch to branch and needle to needle, ball to ball to the very top of the star and down again they came right up close to the most beautiful thing they'd have ever seen. Finally, they were done. Slowly, silently, they crept down and disappeared and vanished just like that! But the tree was covered with cobwebs from top to bottom not a spot had they missed! Now the Christ Child knew how the house mother disliked cobwebs, and he knew how much the children would be disappointed to find their tree so carefully decorated covered with dull cobwebs. As the Christ Child leaned and touched the webs, in a brief moment they had all turned to shimmering silver, looking like icicles. Never, in all time had there been such a tree, and it was hard to say who had been the most excited, the house mother, the children or the spiders when they awoke on Christmas morning.
