from tíie ©rector of Parsing APRIL IS CANCER CONTROL MONTH Pennsylvania ranked fourth in 1989 in newly diagnosed cancer patients. Florida rates third, New York second and California is the highest. The lowest state is Alaska. The highest death rate per 100,000 population is the district of Columbia. Cancer is a large group of disease characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Lung cancer is on the rise and stomach and uterine cancer is on the decrease. The American Cancer Society statistics are based on a five year survival rate. The survival rate has increased by an overall average of 50% in the past five years. The main reason for this is early diagnosis due to new modern technology and education. In order to fight Cancer, we must all be aware of the warning signals, have regular check ups and take advantage of cancer screening clinics. It has been said that arthritis is "everyone's disease." That is, arthritis affects us all indirectly or directly, physically or economically, at some time in our lives. Arthritis literally means inflammation of a joint. The word arthritis, however, is used to describe over 100 different conditions which cause pain and aching in joints and connective tissues throughout the body. Five of the most common forms of arthritis are as follows: (1.) Rheumatoid arthritis which is the most serious, painful and crippling; (2.) Osteoarthritis which is a wear-and-tear on the joints that comes with getting older; (3.) Ankylosing spondylitis which is chronic inflammatory arthritis of the spine; (4.) Gout which is an inherited disease that attacks small joints; and (5.) Rheumatic fever which is an acute systemic disease following a streptococcus infection. According to The Arthritis Foundation, there are certain warning signs and symptoms of arthritis that everyone should know: 1. persistent pain and stiffness on arising 2. pain or tenderness in one or more joints 3. recurrence of these symptoms, especially when they involve more than one joint 4. pain and stiffness in the neck, low back, knees and other joints 5. tingling sensation in the fingertips, hands and feet 6. unexplained weight loss, fever and weakness. Arthritis is a very serious disease. Dr. Alan Wenakis, a well known specialist, encourages sufferers to take several simple steps toward leading a more active and comfortable lifestyle. He states that arthritis sufferers can control pain and stiffness through (1.) exercise to improve flexibility and joint mobility, (2.) good nutrition, (3.) medical treatment and (4.) a positive attitude. Finally, the Arthritis Foundation states "People must come to understand how serious arthritis can be. And that something can be done. That the earlier proper treatment starts, the better the chances of escaping pain, disability and lifelong handicaps." By Rhonda Walker Licensed Physical Therapist jfrcim Cite ?Unninistrator "Because I live, ye shall live also." John 14:19 Life is wonderful. We all love this mortal life. We should enjoy every minute of it, for every minute is precious. What a pity that we have only a few of those minutes in our lifetime. Jesus Christ, who rose from the dead said to us: "Because I live, ye shall live also." Nothing greater will ever be said by anybody in our lifetime than this. Life actually is two sides of the same coin: There is life over there, and there is life over here. And it is all in eternity. Eternity is not something which starts in the future after we die. Eternity according to the dictionary, means always. So we are now in eternity, the mortal side of eternity. Those loved ones of us who have passed over are in the immortal side of eternity. What will our state over there ultimately be? Apostle Paul refuses to speculate on the kind of body over there, but the "personality" will be recognizable and alive. Jesus said: "I am the resurrection, and the life, he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." What a tremendous statement. In immortality, the body, as we know it is not needed. For a period of years our spirit is housed in that temple we call our body, but after our body falls away our spirit is set free. Hear the promise again and again, "Because I live, ye shall live also.” He will take care of us. Throughout the years you must have heard another great promise: "Let not your heart be troubled neither let it be afraid." Then again: "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you ... that where I am, there ye may be also." John 14:2-3. Jesus Christ rose from the dead and on this fact has been built our Christian religion. "For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end." (Hebrews 3:14) When our trust lessens, spiritual blessings decline. Life in Christ is to maintain trust steadfastly through every pain, sorrow or trouble unto the end. Keep the faith! And have a glorious Easter! A resurrected life!
