&ctíWtp 2)ígl)líijliiff NIGHT OF ENCHANTMENT When Autumn creeps up the hillsides on silent frost shod feet, Following in its footsteps is the night when goblins meet. Tis on this night Fall weaves a spell round folks both young and old, and strange enchantment fills the air as witching hours unfold. Up in the moon, old Pumpkin Face emits an eerie light, and yowling cats arch high their spines, as howling dogs take flight. Cackling witches take o'er the sky on broomstick aeroplanes, while bats suspended, wrong side up, watch from the weather vanes. Weird little forms, strangely attired, dance up and down the street. Leaving behind when they depart, echoes of "Trick or Treat.” Jack-o-lantems with pixie smiles seem to enjoy the fun, but screeching owls appear to say they'll gladly see it done. Witches, goblins, and spooks galore choose this night to convene, and none but brave folk dare go out the eve of Halloween. THANKSGIVING PRAYER Lord, we thank thee...for the precious heritage our forefathers gave, for noble ones so fearless, true and brave. Who came to a wilderness unknown, transforming waste to a foundation of stone...Surviving dangers, loneliness and fears, looking and trusting to the future years. This day we lift our hearts, for we are free to sing our songs of thanks, all thanks to thee. We thank thee, Lord, this heritage we know has come to us through thee, and so in humbleness we lift our hearts in prayer, asking thy protection and thy daily care. We thank thee Lord.... For food, shelter, hearth, home, and love, for herds, new grain and blessings from above. As year by year we meet in festive scenes, help us to know just what Thanksgiving means, and on this day of days in bright November help us live true, and heritage remember, and strive each year for better, nobler living, giving thanks to God, on this Thanksgiving. By: Mamie Ozbum Odum Ifrom tlje Director of I2uransj By Gloria Jean Short November is known for many things in the health care field. National Diabetes Month, National Epilepsy Awareness and one of today's most common and widespread problems among our elderly, National Alzheimer's Awareness Month. The following article is written by Bethlen Home's Director of Nursing. This article is to help make you aware of the disease and remind you that there is help and support for the family and the patient. THE ALZHEIMER’S FAMILY Approximately 2.5 million Americans suffer from some type of Dementia. (Dementia - "mental deterioration") Alzheimer's disease causes seventy percent of this dementia. Every year over one hundred twenty thousand people will die with Alzheimer's. This makes it the fourth leading cause of death in adults. The first three are heart disease, cancer and stroke. Alzheimer's usually occurs after age sixty five. Approximately one person out of twenty, between the ages of sixty five and eighty four, are affected by Alzheimer's Disease. Symptoms of Alzheimer's include: memory loss, inability to perform routine tasks, poor judgement, disorientation, personality change, difficulty learning and loss of language skills. Alzheimer's Disease affects the entire family when it strikes...all generations. Because of slow progress, which dismantles the mind and destroys the body, it causes great emotional pain to the entire family. Many times the stress of having a loved one with Alzheimer's becomes too great. Research continues to help those affected by this dreaded disease, and some researchers feel they are close to treatment that will slow down its progress. In the meantime, there are support groups and educational programs available to help families through these trying times. We here at the Bethlen Home would be happy to help you find one of these support groups if you are interested. God bless all our families and especially those having to deal with Alzheimer's Disease.
