Spring 2011 Sara Takacs — Branch 176 T his is my third year studying at Indiana University, nestled in southern Indiana. Majoring in neuroscience with minors in chemistry and Central Eurasian studies, I plan to attend medical school after receiving my degree. Having moved away from the close-knit Hungarian community in northwest Indiana as a child, I am fortunate to attend one of the few universities to offer Hungarian studies. Here I have not only had the opportunity to further my Hungarian language skills but also knowledge of Hungarian history and culture—a contrasting but extremely enriching and lively addition to the sciences. I take part in the Hungarian Cultural Association. This year, I acted as treasurer, and we commemorate major holidays, hold an annual themed conference and concert, and host picnics, films, and a weekly coffee hour for students, faculty, and community members to converse. Besides my studies, I also volunteer heavily in a research lab on campus and am about to embark on research for my senior thesis, focusing on lipids signaling pain and inflammatory responses. On the path to studying medicine, some of my role models are the physicians I have shadowed—allowing me to experience their everyday interactions with patients and their desire to improve the quality of life. Over the summer, I enjoyed volunteering my time at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis where I helped out in the emergency department. My spare time is spent laughing and cooking with friends and family. I would like to thank the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America for this generous scholarship, Kati Mischak for her recommendation, and my parents for their inspiration and support.
