Jessica Pogranyi—member of Branch 93 I am in my sophomore year at Northeastern University. Currently, I am studying International Business with a minor in Marketing and Italian. After completing the five-year program, I hope to be fluent in Italian, which will be my third language next to Hungarian and English. I will be abroad in Italy for one whole year studying at an Italian University and working for an Italian company. My past experiences and my cultural background have led me to choose this major. Since I was seven years old until about fifteen years old, I attended Hungarian school every Saturday. I learned many interesting things about the history of Hungary. Over the years, I have gone to Hungary many times as well as to Austria and Slovakia. These experiences have been very rewarding to me since I was able to travel and actually experience the culture rather than just learning about it in school. Northeastern University is a very diverse school in which I am surrounded by many different cultures, and I am learning a great deal about them. When I was growing up, I was a competitive dancer. I went to many competitions and dances for endless hours each week. Even though it was sometimes a challenge to balance everything, in the end, it was very rewarding because I did what I loved to do and learned how to manage my time, which has carried over into my college life and work life. In the future, I hope to work for an international company so that I can integrate my knowledge from my background as well as the information that I will continue to learn at the university. —Jessica was recommended by Mrs. Ilona Toth Jonathan Joseph Geske— member of Branch 62 I am very proud to be a Hungarian and a member of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. Also, I am thankful for the opportunity HRFA is offering me in financial aid. I have to thank my grandmother and all her Hungarian friends for my strong Hungarian heritage. My grandmother attends Holy Trinity Hungarian church where mass is spoken in Hungarian, and I also attend on occasion as well as meet with other Hungarian people at various functions. My favorite function is the Kossuth Club’s Hungarian picnic in the summer. My favorite part of the picnic, besides the good food, is of course the making of the Langos. I have helped with this process many times and the Hungarian women are always very grateful. I have visited Hungary two times in my life and will definitely be going back a few more. There are many relatives there who I can visit as well as take in all of the beautiful and historic sites that Hungary has to offer. The fortresses, castles and architecture fascinated me on those trips. I also enjoy researching Hungarian history and started a collection of miniature Hungarian soldiers. Presently, I am attending Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. As a sophomore, I am studying to be an Agricultural Engineer specializing in Machine Systems. For my major, there are various clubs and events I attend and participate in. I plan on participating in the quarter scale tractor pull competition for the rest of my years in school. I actively participate in intramural sports such as basketball and flag football. When on break from school, I work part time at a movie theater, which I enjoy very much. Another hobby of mine is the cello which I have been playing since the sixth grade and enjoy it very much. I have had the opportunity to play a few Hungarian folk songs. Again, I thank the HRFA for helping me further my education. —Jonathan was recommended by Mrs. Maria Kovács 24
