Fraternity i Testvériség Museum Shop Owner Gifts Bethlen Communities Kathy A. Megyeri i he American Visionary Art I Museum in the Federal Hill area I off Key Highway in downtown Baltimore, MD has been voted the “best museum’’ in Baltimore magazine’s latest reader’s poll. Fifteen years ago this October, it was designated by the U.S. Congress as America’s official national museum and education center for intuitive, self-taught artistry. In 1995, the city of Baltimore gave land on the south shore of its inner harbor under the conditions that the organizers would clean up residual pollution from a copper paint factory and a whiskey warehouse. The results have been astounding as this is not your typical, staid, history museum, but a vibrant, educational, mind-mending, artistic, eye-popping, modern facility that gives credence to individual creativity and imagination. Just as delightful, surprising, and whimsical as is the museum is the fun- filled shop inside, owned and operated by a giant of a man with an even bigger heart and a well-known supporter of charities, Ted Frankel. When entering the museum shop, appropriately called “Sideshow,” you are greeted by Zoltar, the Magnificent, a mechanized fortune-teller who for a small fee, will offer you your horoscope and a prognostication of your future. Then, as your eyes spin in all directions to take in the myriads of art books, gifts, jewelry, international artwork, cards, wrapping paper, masks, sculpture, and even bins of sales specials, you are in for a shopping experience unlike any other you’ve encountered in a museum store. Ted has an eye for the unique and makes sure there is something special for everyone from kids to elders like me to take home a memento to remember their Visionary Art experience. And Ted is so generous. Each holiday season, Ted hosts a holiday party in his art-filled Baltimore home. He asks guests to come, enjoy themselves, and support a local charity. This year, he’s collecting pajamas for Baer School, a special place for special children. When first visiting his shop two years ago, I mentioned that my father is in hospice care and that the residents’ only source of entertainment is playing bingo on their “good days.” It Ted Frankel was then that Ted gave me small bingo prizes at heavily discounted prices that I could send the facility to enhance their “play dates.” Now, for the holiday season, he’s packed two fifty pound boxes of goodies for the Bethlen Communities’ residents and staff for their holiday party. Ted believes that “if it’s in your power to help, you should... no questions asked.” Thanks to museum shop owner Ted Frankel, many elders in the Bethlen Home will certainly smile more this holiday season.
