WRETCHED CROSS It chilled the soul for one to see That gristly cross made from a tree. Devised to take away one's breath, An instrument conceived for death. But death, unlike that was before, A prolonged agony of horror. Excruciating pain that sent A helpless soul to cruel, cruel end. Now, would there be one who'd elect This horrid death himself subject? To die this way, not for himself, But in the place of someone else? There is; His name is Jesus Christ, Incarnate God and Perfect Light. For Jesus Christ in subjugation Submitted to humiliation. And naked He was crucified, Upon a cross He slowly died. Well knowing what He would endure, That, by His death, He would assure. For only He could pay the price For all our sins, a sacrifice. And by His blood, He paved the way That we may dwell in heav'n some day. So this cruel cross, not as before, Stands not for death but life restored. And now, when I look at this tree, I see what Christ has done for me. Thus, what was once a wretched thing, Salvation, peace, and joy now bring. The cross that once meant loss of life, Now symbolizes hope in Christ. And though I have not that is worth To justify my own rebirth, I have a peace, though I was lost, For, by God's grace, I have His cross. Zoltán V.
